Caltrain sat mesmerized by the hatching ... never had he seen a birth so amazing, so filled with emotion that emanated out from the young and touched every heart present. He was reveling in the feelings, quietly stunned, wondering if this was what it felt like to touch the mind of a dragon, when the comical actions of the little Surprise Egg hatchling caught his attention.
Thus, he was grinning, chuckling, bloody meat dripping from his hand, when a sudden sense of peace, tranquility, and joy overcame him.
At that moment, the Euphoria Egg split, and the little brown hatchling, so beautiful with his shaded body, glistening wet from the contents of the egg, made his appearance.
Caltrain caught his breath ... what a pretty little brown. And it was heading ... for him?
No, it couldn't be, could it? He was sitting next to Ravyna, after all, who was already bonded to a dragon ... surely the flitter was going toward....
... but no! It was he, himself, this lovely creature had chosen! Before the brown even made physical connection with him, Caltrain could feel the joy spreading through his body, though his mind, through his heart. He gathered the tiny hatchling into his arms, and the little one, with a sense of delightful peace, opened his mouth and trilled to be fed.
Each small strip of bloody herdbeast was swallowed with a sense of gratitude and joy. Caltrain saw nothing but the flitter, heard nothing but his happy chirrups, felt nothing but total content, as he watched his new little friend eat.
When the belly was full, and the Beastmaster had tenderly cleaned the blood off his little friend's face and front with the hem of his own tunic, he realized Ravyna was watching them, grinning.
The lovely little brown settled, content and stuffed, against his breast, and he whispered to the greenrider, with a broad smile, "I'm going to call him 'Rapture'."

Across the Clutch, eggs were twitching and jumping to a rhythm of their own, creating a chaotic jumble of movement. The Pride Egg was rocking fiercely, its shell trembling with the efforts of the flitter within. It seemed that the Depression Egg had been spurred on to true effort now, for the crack that had formed in the collision with the Euphoria Egg began to widen. Even the Smug Egg, which, for reasons of its own, had not begun to rock, showed signs of awakening.
It was the Suffering Egg that cracked first, though. The navy blue flitter inside had worked his way around to that hateful weak point in his otherwise protective shell and used it to break the shell entirely. Luckily, it did not take much effort, for the Suffering Blue was obviously not healthy. He lay collapsed upon the sand for some time, simply breathing, while the Annoyance Bronze buzzed around, still unwilling to Impress. He didn't mind if it was bothering his person-to-be; this was far too much fun!
As if the air in the weyr wasn't bleak enough with the heartbreaking emotions of the Suffering Blue, the Depression Egg chose this moment to finally shatter. This grayish green fire lizard with olive highlights emitted a mournful cheep as she tripped over a shard of shell. This was all too overwhelming for her, and she wanted to crawl back into her shell and escape the sorrow coming from the Suffering Blue. As if she didn't feel bad enough already!
Someone in the crowd was far more encouraging in their thoughts. Somehow, the Depression Green found the motivation to weave her way through the remaining eggs and then past countless souls too bleak for her. With her head drooping, the green bumped into H'run without realizing that she had reached her person. In a sudden flash, her mood shifted altogether. Energy flowed through her veins at the smell of the meat in his hand and the warmth in his heart, and she clambered to his hand in a heartbeat, chirruping pleadingly for him to feed her.
Snatching all attention immediately back to the Clutch, the Rage Egg snapped in half, the two pieces flying apart and leaving a dark bronze with stripes on his rear limbs. His wings were flared in an aggressive stance, as if he was ready to fight anyone who dared come between him and food. Even his whirling eyes were narrowed as he surveyed the scene before him, a thin tongue whipping out to taste the air.
As if his luck wasn't bad enough, the Suffering Blue chose that moment to attempt to rise. He heaved himself off the sand, revealing a stunted form, which particularly manifested itself in his left back leg. His less-than-perfect stature was likely a result of his unhealthy conditions within his egg, but he had the potential to grow healthy and strong. That was, until the Rage Bronze identified this threat.
With a threatening bugle, the bronze leapt forward onto the blue's back, causing the smaller flitter to collapse altogether back into the sand. The Annoyance Bronze shied away in fear at such ferocity. Sharp talons, still slick with egg sac, tore into the Suffering Blue, whose scream of terror and pain echoed in the weyr.
Unbeknownst to all, for every eye in the room was likely riveted on this terrifying scene, the gold within the Pride Egg had pulled her way out through the large hole she had chipped away. This pale gold with orange splotches hissed in fury. Although only a Hatchling, she was extremely possessive of anything she deemed hers. This bronze had no right to decide who would live or die upon these sands; that was her decision alone to make! She was Queen.
With her wings flared out in an impressive show of size and health, the Pride Gold charged the Rage Bronze. Surprisingly, his anger was quick to vanish in the face of such outrage, and the bronze leapt off his victim, scurrying quickly to Fallen's side. There, he lashed his tail and hissed, demanding food immediately. He did not want to have to use his claws again!
After a moment of consideration, the Pride Gold decided that her decision had been carried out with great success. The blue was still alive, if sluggish and marred by ichor, and her hunger was now the most important goal in the flitter's mind. She moved swiftly into the room, eyeing dripping handfuls of meat while tasting thoughts, seeking one that appealed to her as much as the food. Suddenly, a mind clicked, and she marched straight onto S'lem's leg. There, she perched, crooning and gesturing at the food in his hand with a demanding snout.
As bleak as the future had appeared for the Suffering Blue before, a shifting of his limbs as he struggled to rise revealed a badly torn right wing sail. He began to stumble forward, and the thought was present in all minds: Would he ever fly with that wing? The blue could spare no time for these thoughts, however. He needed his person now more than ever. Collapsing in front of Skye, his love for his person flowed out of him, as he raised his head weakly and gazed up at her, eyes whirling with adoration and desperation.

Calysta gripped S'lem's arm as she watched the hatching, frowning at the aggression of some of the fire lizards. She tried to keep track of them all but they were moving around or hiding, it was quite a bit more confusing then a dragon hatching.
Her frown deepened as the bronze charged its sibling. She couldn't quite tell the color of the fire lizard until it got closer and she smiled, it was a lovely green. She was surprised when the little green hid behind her then climbed to her shoulder, wincing a little as he little claws dug in for purchase. Calysta smiled and turned her full attention to the green "Hello little one," she said softly, feeding the hungry little green who ate every bite of meat quickly. Calysta made sure to keep the pieces small so that the green wouldn't choke on them. "I think I'll name you Mystery," she said softly and the green chirped softly, her belly full and feeling sleepy.
---
S'lem patted his sister's hand when she gripped his arm. He shook his head as he watched the antics of the fire lizards, something he had never seen before.
He frowned when the poor little blue hatched and collapsed to the sands. He started to step forward, but thought better of it, they might not like him stepping in to intervene.
He couldn't believe his eyes when the newly hatched bronze actually pounced upon his poor blue sibling with such rage and anger. He clenched his fists, upset that they were all just standing there and watching. He moved to step forward when a golden blur charged the two and scared the bronze off.
S'lem watched the little blue for a moment longer, noticing that the gold had moved off. He glanced around the room to spot her and was greatly surprised to feel something clinging to his leg. He looked down and was even more surprised to find the gold clinging to his pant leg, looking meaningfully at the meat in his hand. He quickly moved to feed her, slowly encouraging her to move up to his shoulder. Once there she sat there regally, gobbling up ever bite of meat she feed him till he thought her belly would pop.
Her hunger finally sated she curled her tail possessively about his neck and looked down upon the remaining hatchlings. S'lem shook his head and reached up to pet gently along her neck "I think I'll name you Majesty," he said with a soft chuckle. Majesty regarded him for a moment then chirped her acceptance of the name. S'lem turned to look for the injured blue, finding that he had crawled to a woman he vaguely recognized. He hoped there was a healer in the room for the injured blue.

Skye watched the hatching with a slight frown on her lips, things were going very different then she had ever seen at a hatching dragon or fire lizard. The all seemed to be moving around in hurried movement or even hiding.
She opened her mouth to cry out in pity for the little blue that hatched so weak, but nothing came out as she could only watch him sadly, would he even live? She shook her head at the sight of his small stature and his stunted back leg. She just wanted to scoop him up and take care of him!
She did cry out as a bronzed leaped upon the little blue with still wet, but sharp talons. She tried to force her way through the crowd, but they were all slack jawed at the sight and unwilling to move. She cursed them and finally made her way to the front of the group, but the gold flit that had hatched already ran the bronze off. She felt tears sting her eyes at the sight of the poor blue who was crawling toward the group.
Skye was surprised when he stopped at her, looking up at her with such sad eyes full of adoration and desperation. Skye knelt down and ever so gently scooped the little blue into her arms, letting the tears flow as she looked over his wounds, his poor wing! She sent him loving, reassuring thoughts as she pulled a handkerchief from her pocket to gingerly dab at the flowing ichor to get a better look at his wounds. She could feel his pain and his hunger. Thankfully most of the scratches on his back were shallow, but his wing needed the attention of a healer, but even then she wasn't sure he would be able to fly.
Skye wraped her handkerchief gently about his wing and sat back on her heels, tearing the meat she had into tiny pieces for him to eat. The blue ate slowly, gaining a little strength from having food in his belly and the loving feelings his person was sending him. Skye hummed to him softly "Well make you all better my little one," she cooed softly "Lucky," she mumbled and he chirped so softly she almost didn't hear, and the name stuck, he was indeed Lucky.

The air was tense in the weyr now, and the eggs themselves seemed to be trembling. This movement may have merely been the efforts of the fire lizards within to hatch, but it served to propitiate the dark mood nonetheless. All of the eggs showed movement now, but the Smug Egg was the fiercest. It twitched and bounced like mad, as if the very sand beneath it was heaving it upward.
Suddenly, it was flung away on to its side, causing a large crack to form. However, the sand where it once stood didn't stop moving! Grains shivered downward from a mound that seemed to grow, until a curving form appeared above the level of the sand. There had been an egg buried underneath the sand! This must have been the reason for the Smug Egg's haughty feeling that it knew something the others didn't. It had been hiding the Loneliness Egg.
With no more resistance above it, the shell popped outward from the top of the gray-shaded Loneliness Egg. A brown flitter nose poked itself out, breathing deeply of the precious air. This fire lizard had been forced to work harder than most to escape his shell. His rest lasted only a moment, though, before his struggles began once again, the nose withdrawn and talons replacing it.
The Smug Egg was not to be forgotten or undone. The fire lizard within had eagerly set to work on the crack formed by the Loneliness Brown's efforts. His egg was first to fully Hatch, as the crack grew to split the egg in half, and a royal blue fire lizard clambered out. He stood triumphantly upon the sand, staring at the shard chips that gradually fell from the Loneliness Egg, when suddenly the Annoyance Bronze made his presence known once again.
The bronze darted forward with a spray of sand that coated both the blue and the half-buried egg, for he was romping playfully to the watching crowd, having finally identified his own. With a last teasing twitch of his tail, he scurried over to Ravyna, climbing gently to her shoulder where he promptly settled to chew on her hair. It wasn't as tasty as he had hoped!
The Smug Blue had had enough of this, and he turned with a sound that rather resembled a 'sniff', stalking off the sand. He was quite alarmed to realize that many of the onlookers were already eagerly stuffing the mouths of other flitters. His pace quickened as he weaved his way through the crowd, and a relieved chirp escaped him when he found D'gellin. Although his one had another flitter hovering about, at least she wasn't demanding his attention right now! Besides, the blue was quite confident that his handsome hide would easily keep his person's attention on him.
With a final shower of sand and a grunt of effort, the Loneliness Brown hauled himself out of the top of the egg, not bothering to unbury it further. He breathed deeply for a few minutes more, his cocoa-dusted hide glistening in the light, but there was nothing that could keep him on the sands any longer. Trapped beneath that sand while his siblings basked in the air and Hatched easily to find their own, this insecure flitter needed reassurance from his person immediately. Determinedly, he stepped forward, whirling eyes skipping from person to person in a desperate search. His low croon filled the room, abruptly cutting off in a squeak of delight when he reached Cilnah. He had found her at last, and his loneliness would be no more!
It seemed that the Hope Egg just knew what everyone needed. It split like a ray of light breaking through thick clouds, showering the room with sudden brightness and good will. This lovely fire lizard of a deep forest colour, brushed lightly with a paler green, looked benignly upon everyone. Her thoughts were warm and encouraging to all she made eye contact with, which was everyone near. There was one person in particular who drew her, though, and the Hope Green stepped lightly to Crown. The bronze already with her person did not disturb her, for she knew that Crown would be there for her when she needed it.

Although the Hatching had taken a bleak turn part way through, the Hope Green had set the stage for a triumphant finish. Spurred on by the sudden warmth in the room, the Rapture Egg committed its energy to forming a hole, which a wing promptly burst through, fanning in the air. The rest of the green flitter soon followed, and she rolled onto the sand, picking herself up and dusting herself off without a sound of complaint. Small of stature, yet with a vibrant lime green hide, she surveyed the crowd.
Suddenly, she darted forward, for the Rapture Green never did anything halfheartedly. Once she had made up her mind, there was nothing stopping her, and she had only one goal at the moment: food. She trilled joyously as she nearly sailed through the air, though her wings were held out to dry in the breeze rather than for actual use. With a triumphant cry, she landed promptly in M'kel's lap, for the bronzerider had been crouching low in hopes of tempting forward a flitter. His eyes lit up as he moved to feed the green, reveling in her euphoric excitement. Finally, after two long Hatchings (and this one had nearly been over!), he had a flitter of his own! And she was a marvelous creature, to be sure. "Pixie," he murmured, stroking her eye ridges while stuffing her mouth with his free hand. She crooned through a mouthful of meat, causing it sound more like a choked-off squawk.
The final egg, the Happiness Egg, tipped over from its erect position, rolling onto its side and over and over a few times before breaking into multiple shards. A bronze fire lizard continued to roll, though he had left the confines of his egg, before coming to a rest against a mound of sand. He struggled to rise for a few moments before realizing he was upside down, at which point he flapped his wings in order to right himself. This handsome fellow had golden highlights all along his form, with a light bronze hide that seemed to glow with his inner delight.
His head weaved back and forth for a few moments, for apparently the Happiness Bronze had been made dizzy by his Hatching. After a short time, though, he abruptly rose to his feet and began marching off, head held high with triumph. Until he disappeared, leaving an echoing squawk where he had once been. A fearful gasp came from many of the onlookers: Had this lovely bronze gone between? A moment later, though, all fears were assauged, as a bronze form seemed to pry itself out of a mound of sand. The bronze had fallen into the buried remains of the Loneliness Egg! He did not seem at all bothered by this upset, though, merely chirping in amusement and moving on.
His excitement increased as he neared one of the waiting people, and he hummed with pleasure at the smell of blood. He prodded Felina's leg, utterly delighted to have found the right person to feed him! And food would taste so good right now...yes, yes it would.

Cilnah wasn't here for the Hatching. Well, she was, but not in the way that the others were. She was just here by chance. She wouldn't even have known of the event if there hadn't been a rider who had come into the kitchens in a rather bit of a panic. He'd been rambling on about a hatching going on. It had taken the cook a good five minutes to get him calmed enough to blather out that a flitter hatching was going on. While he'd been occupied with a mug of mulled wine, the kitchen staff had turned to her, since she'd been in the midst of cleaning up some of the pots and pans. A slow day in the kitchens meant that Cilnah got sent with an armful of meat to the weyr where the little creatures were first making their way into the world.
So here she was, standing unobtrusively in the back, resting up against one of the walls, her arms crossed over her chest. Her eyes were on the small eggs rocking on the sands, curious as to what would come from them. She watched through most of the event, turning every once and a while to grab some fresh meat for the new hatchlings who seemed to be insatiable, handing them to the newly bonded people so that they could feed their small friends. It went this way for most of the time, until near the end, when most of the eggs had spilled their treasures on the sand, and the flitters had made their choices as to who was theirs.
She had turned back to the table to study the supply of food when distress seemed to permeate through the room. A glance over her shoulder revealed the cause, a small blue that was getting worked over by it's brother, only to be broken up by the Queen flitter. "Well, that's good," she whispered absently. Noticing that most of the eggs were empty shards on the sand, Cilnah started to gather up the leftovers. But she was stopped by a sudden trill that was decidedly distressed. It caught her off guard when the sound not only became louder, but changed into a sound she recognized will from attending other Hatchings, both dragon and flitter. It was a happy sound of one that had found Theirs.
Turning slightly to see which of the people nearby had obtained such a vocal new friend, her eyes widened as far as her facial features allowed. There, sitting at her feet, looking up at her with hunger in his eyes, a feeling of love and need filling her mind, as well as a pressing desire for food, was a rich brown hatchling. Slowly, almost reverently, Cilnah knelt down, offering the flitter her hand. When he chirped happily and hopped onto it, curling up her arms and scurrying up onto her shoulder, she almost choked on the mixture of a laugh and a cry of disbelief.
"You are a precious little one," she whispered, offering him a strip of meat. A laugh pushed it's way from her chest as he snapped it up, then chirped for more. She fed the little brown creature happily, still disbelieving that he had chosen her. And to think, she was only here by chance! When he had finally eaten his fill, his tummy full to bursting, he curled up around her neck and trilled contently, enjoying the feeling of a warm, comforting hand brushing along his hide. "Hello, my Makamae, my precious little one." She'd decided the moment she'd seen him, this little cocoa brown was precious, and she had named him such. She felt a sort of peace radiating from him, soothing the sadness, the dark feeling he had first been giving her, that reminded her of a terrible silence, of being alone of an eternity. "You never have to be alone again," Cilnah promised, to which Makamae answered with an easy, comfortable sound.

Even as Glomp settled down to nap, curling around in her lap, she watched the events with wide eyes. Hatching's all around, drama within the little creatures... But mostly she liked watching them break through, and she liked watching them find Their's. Quite content with her`lizard, she was happy to settle back and shove food into waiting Rider's hand as they Bonded to the `lizards.
The Green that suddenly appeared called Crown's attention to it, just like many other's. Dark forest green, the color of everglades and woods, she seemed to have the same calming effect that some people got when they walked through a forest. She was pretty, but Crown was not interested in Green's, thank you. She had her Bronze Glomp to worry about.
Of course, when the content feeling about her nearly doubled in happiness, she looked around for what, and saw it near her foot. With a trill of laughter, the Green daintily placed on paw upon the sandaled foot, and Crown gaped at her. Two? Two lizards? And a green... Did that mean that she would Impress a Green? No, she had impressed Glomp first, and he was a Bronze... But Crown couldn't help but reaching down to gently scoop up the Hope egg, while Glomp watched with happy whirling eyes.
"Ummm... What to call you?"
The Green, settling on her knee happily, nudged the hand that still was wrapped possessively around her. She was hungry, after all.
"Oh..."
And so Crown began to feed her, watching the Hope Green. Even as she was finishing up, and the Hatching was wrapping up, Crown was at a loss.
"Euphoria."
She finally decided, settling on the name that seemed to describe the feeling that this small green created.

Ravyna was torn between watching Caltrain with his new little brown, and the antics of the flitters on the sand. That shimmering little bronze fellow with his nose in everyone else's business certainly was stirring up trouble! She frowned slightly as he bothered the other flitters, and when the sand went flying everywhere and he did his happy little dance, she stifled a chuckle. Certainly, whoever that one chose was going to have their hands full!
Then, so suddenly that she wasn't sure what had hit her, Ravyna herself had her hands full!
The beautiful but bothersome bronze was on her shoulder, chomping on her hair!
"Stop that," she whispered, trying not to draw more attention to herself than the flitter already had, and reached to disentangle him ... for he most certainly had gotten himself into a predicament.
A long strand of black hair was wrapped around his mouth, another around his neck, and the waving of his wings to extract himself had only managed to make matters worse.
The harder Ravyna struggled to disengage the little fellow, the more tangled he became, for his efforts to help were only making matters worse.
Finally, sending firm thoughts to the fellow tinged with disapproving emotions, she said, "Okay, now STOP."
Immediately the little bronze held still, with the most pathetic, "What did I do to make you mad?" look on his face. He hung in her hair like a marionette, wings outstretched, legs spraddled, and looked up into her face with the most appealing expression.
She smiled and chuckled and unwrapped the now immobilized fire lizard from her tresses.
"There you go, you little nuisance," she said softly, and the fellow settled into her hands and chirped with curiosity as it sensed her shift to affectionate feelings. "Now, are you hungry ... 'Nuisance'?"
At that the flitter opened it's mouth and let out the most ear-splitting screech, like the sound of finger nails scraping down a writing slate.
Quickly, glancing around in horror as she was certain all heads were turning her way and people were about to start throwing things at her, she stuffed a bloody chunk of meat in his mouth. The maw opened, the sound returned, and she stuffed another. Ravyna fed the flitter as fast as she could, to prevent him from making everyone in the weyr's teeth ache.
Finally, his belly full, the little one let out a satisfied belch, and immediately fell asleep against her chest.
Of course, he at once began to snore loudly....
Caltrain glanced over, his lovely and quiet little darling snoozing quietly in his arms, and whispered, "Well, that was ... different."
Ravyna sighed and hoped Nuisance would sleep for a while.

Fallen watched the hatching scene with unwavering eyes, one hand cupping his chin, elbow resting on his knee. Of the draconic cousins, fire lizards appeared to be the more violent of the two, from the little he'd seen. There were a few times when humane sympathy nearly drove him to intervene. But if no one else moved, aside from a few uncomfortable stirrings, then it wasn't his place to stop it either. That didn't entirely improve his outlook, however, when the bronze that had caused the uproar and attacked his clutch-brother came to hide behind Fallen. At first he was repulsed. The coward had run as soon as he'd been challenged. But when Fallen turned to keep an eye on the violent fire lizard, he was abruptly struck with an odd thought. Suddenly the fire lizard didn't seem so bad at all. No, justified in his actions even, because of how brilliant he was.
The young man furrowed his brows, eyeing the hissing fire lizard uncertainly. "...You want some...?" Perplexed by his suddenly twisted emotions as well as an abrupt hunger in his own gut, Fallen offered the bronze some of his meat. The dark flitter dove into it with such ferocity that Fallen was alarmed. For a moment the fire lizard coughed on some meat stuck in his throat, but as soon as he recovered he was crying for more, tail lashing and claws scrabbling at the bowl. "Take it easy." Fallen snapped, ripping a new strip of meat into more manageable pieces. It was only as the bronze crooned a thanks for food that Fallen realized what was happening or rather what had happened. "Fire lizard." He called quietly. The bronze didn't respond. Fallen's brows pulled together in frustration as he pulled a name out of the air. "Kaine." The bronze looked up, intelligent eyes whirling. "Kaine then." Fallen repeated, an unwillingly amused smile twitching at his lips as he continued to feed the bronze.
D'gellin's mouth pulled down at the corners as one of the flitters turned violently on its clutch-brother. Would it be so hard to impress peacefully? Is everything alright, D'gellinmine? Lancetoth queried, his eagerness not to be left out pressing against D'gellin's mind almost uncomfortably. Yeah. Nothing too out of the ordinary. D'gellin assured him with relief as the little golden fire lizard broke up the scuffle.
When he heard the chirp of a fire lizard, much closer than the others, D'gellin jolted in surprise. "Hello there." He murmured to at the handsome blue, a smile automatically appearing on his face. Despite Mother's peep of unhappiness, D'gellin held out some meat for the blue, who eagerly pounced on it. The young man grinned as he coaxed the blue to perch on the edge of the bowl, stroking the tiny head as he fed him. "Hmm, what to name you.." Have you gotten a little cousin, D'gellinmine?! Yep! He paused. What should I name him? There was a pause on Lancetoth's side as well. Little Cousin. D'gellin rolled his eyes. What about... He chuckled as the blue, growing full, curled up on D'gellin's lap and looked up at him with a content chatter, eyes whirling sleepily. Whirl? Hmm...well it's your little cousin.[/color]
((EDIT: Changed Fallen's flitter's name...because the 'th' in the old name could have potentially been confusing. ^^;; ))
