Kitari's blue eyes were locked upon the progress of all those Weyrlings going before her, studying their techniques and subsequent successes or failures. She winced as one of the Weyrlings started to slip sideways while in the air, but luckily there no falls nor hard landings. Overall, the girl was quite impressed by the performances, for the riders seemed to be taking to the air as naturally as their dragons did. It was a mild first flight, to be sure, but that was the best approach. With a first success behind them, the Weyrlings would be more confident about attempting less easy flights.
When it was nearly time for her and Lefayeth to take to the skies, Kitari bent furiously over the riding straps once more, checking every cinch and yarding on the strapping to ensure that it was tight. A sudden thought occurred to her and she stopped. This isn't too tight, is it, love? It isn't hurting you?
The golden queen's head swayed for a moment, fixated as she was on the latest pair to fly, before she finally drew her attention back to her rider. The straps? They're fine! You've checked them a dozen times now, and it's time to fly! Lefayeth's tone was somewhat reprimanding, but mostly she wished to reassure her rider. Kitari did worry far too much sometimes! It made the gold slightly indignant. She was not a fragile stalk of greenery, and she didn't appreciate being treated as so by others, although she knew it was simply attentive care coming from her rider.
"All right. Let's do this," Kitari murmured, fierce determination colouring her tone. Lefayeth's head bobbed in agreement as she bent her leg to allow Kitari to clamber up easily. Once seated, the Weyrling began strapping herself in, checking these clasps as thoroughly as those around her dragon. Finally, she was satisfied with their readiness. She leaned forward, having noted that some of the riders were suffering whiplash in the initial leap, and gave Lefayeth the silent command to take to the air.
Despite her preparation, the sheer force of the leap still jarred her, and Kitari grasped the straps so tightly it was almost painful. However, the unpleasant jerking motion was soon replaced by smooth gliding once the queen had assumed a manageable height, and they coasted over the Lake. It was...glorious. All fear had vanished, swallowed up by an overwhelming feeling of freedom and thrill of flying. "This is amazing," she breathed, admiring the pale gold wings to either side of her that shifted instinctively to account for the breeze.
Let's fly away! Lefayeth interrupted suddenly, her eyes whirling with mischief. I want to see the world you always speak of, beyond the Weyr. Kitari laughed lightly, knowing that despite the longing in her dragon's voice, the gold was only teasing. As strong as the desire was to revel in this freedom and fly wherever she pleased with her lifemate, she doubted that B'kay would be amused in the slightest. No, she would wait with the other Weyrlings, enjoying the increase in freedoms they would be granted as training progresed.
I'm sorry, my heart, but it's time to land. Lefayeth humphed slightly, glaring at the shoreline below as if it had personally affronted her. Finally, she acquiesced and descended, dipping her wings to lose height without picking up too much speed, and they landed with only a minor jolt. Before Kitari even had time to ponder checking over the straps once again, Lefayeth had swiveled on the spot, warned her rider ever so briefly, and leapt back into the air.
Kitari was shocked for a moment, then grinned broadly at the gold. She had wanted to be back in the air right away, as well, and could hardly fault Lefayeth for her enthusiasm.
The straps didn't shift at all during the flight. Don't worry, I monitored them, Lefayeth informed Kitari, feeling somewhat guilty for nor waiting for a command.
It's alright, Lefayeth. I was just being silly about them anyways; they are perfectly tight. Maybe even a bit too tight for me... Her dragon rumbled in amusement, alighting on the other shore and folding her wings back to her sides.
Hmmm...maybe it was a good idea to keep the flights short. My wings feel rather tired now, Lefayeth informed her rider sheepishly. Kitari chuckled, patting Lefayeth, who had been overconfident, as always.
They will need exercise to become strong, silly dear. You don't Hatch with flight wings after all.
