((I hope you don't mind if I bring my one of my candidates to watch the fun!)
Kimber was an early rider as was her sister who was already off some where. Kimber made a face at Emberlyn's empty and neatly made bunk before climbing out of her own bed, Dazzle crawling out from under the cot with a wagging tail and a pant. Kimber grinned and ruffled the lean hound's ears before standing.
She quickly dressed and finger combed her shoulder blade length hair. She nodded to herself and headed out the door, her tummy reminding her it was used to earlier breakfasts. Dazzle followed behind happily, sniffing every nook and cranny.
Kimber was about to duck into the kitchen cavern when she spotted a group of weyrlings headed for the lake area. Her curiosity was instantly aroused and breakfast forgotten as she jogged to catch up with the group. She was in awe of the Young dragons and even more so of the full grown ones like the dark bronze that was at the lake already. She grinned when she heard the man's announcement, evidently he was the Weyrling master she had heard about.
She settled down quickly out of the way to watch, wishing she had thought to bring along a scrap of hide to write on. She silently cursed Emberlyn for being absent, perhaps seeing this would show her that the weyr wasn't such a bad place after all.

Gaylen was quickly progressing from confused to hopelessly confused, as she attempted to disengage the tangle of her ancient harness. She had dropped the entire mass at one point, forcing her to dismount with Alabanth's help, and was sitting on the ground against his foreleg as B'kay climbed to his dragon's back to begin the lecture.
The aging healer had managed to get one arm through a loop of harness, thinking to untangle a knot, but instead found that the loop had tightened around her wrist and trapped her there. She stared at it for a moment, never noticing that the entire problem was caused by the fact that she had apparently, on hanging the harness when it was last used, accidentally buckled one of the straps into the wrong buckle.
It was then that she noticed Kimber sitting off to the side, watching the dragons attentively.
Who is that, 'Banth?
Candidate, I believe, the blue replied, tilting his head like a curious hound as he surveyed the girl.
Gaylen wiggled her fingers at the girl, trying to get her attention without drawing anyone else's. "Psst, psst," she hissed, and called in a whisper, "Youngling, might you lend me a hand? I appear to be ... stuck."

Kimber blinked as she heard someone trying to get her attention and at first thought she was in trouble. She flushed slightly and glanced around, spotting Gaylen sitting against her blue with a tangle of leather straps and buckles.
"Youngling, might you lend me a hand? I appear to be ... stuck."
She stood and dusted the seat of her long skirts off and made her way to the older rider. She smiled and curtsied politely "How can I help ma'am?" she asked, trying not to stare at the large blue dragon she was now standing beside, the only dragon she had really been close to was the Search Dragon that had brought them to the weyr.
Dazzle made her way over as well, sniffing curiously and not really all the intimidated by the large dragon since her mistress didn't seem to be distressed.

Alabanth arched his long neck around to give the girl a sniff, and then lowered his graying face, eyes whirling, to ask for a rub.
"He likes his eye ridges rubbed, and the ridges down the front of his face.... and he likes canines. So do I. What is your hound's name?" Gaylen attempted to reach toward the beast, only to be reminded of her predicament when her hand was caught up short by the tangle.
"Oh, every time I pull on this strap," she pulled one of the straps wrapped tightly around her wrist, "The other one tightens up." And indeed, it did, trapping her hand even further. She scowled at the contraption. "Perhaps an extra pair of hands... ?"

((This is so late, it’s not even funny. D= Sorry!))
Shikai! Shikai-mine! Shikai’s eyelids fluttered open, and she peered at the blurry brown mass hovering right above her. “D-Dinaedth?” She said, raising her hands to her eyes to paw at them in an effort to clear her vision. She blinked, and Dinaedth’s face, eyes whirling teal with excitement, came slowly into focus. “What is it, dear?” She asked, her voice soft with the special kindness she had for her beautiful brown, and she reached up to stroke his suede-like cheek. We are to FLY today, Shikai! Come, we must go now, or we shall be late for our first flight! Think, at last, we’ll be ably to take to the skies together! The brown announced excitedly, nudging Shikai’s face softly with his nose.
“Flying?! Today?” Shikai exclaimed, awakening fully at once as all grogginess was instantly replaced by ecstatic enthusiasm. She leapt out of bed, and so quickly pulled on her clothes that she wasn’t aware that her shirt was on backwards until she after she had spent a few moments struggling with the sleeves. Dinaedth leapt down from the dragon couch, and shifted anxiously, as excited as his rider for the coming event. Here, here, come and look! He called, and Shikai, now fully dressed, walked to where the brown dragon stood, and peered down at the weyrbowl. A sense of exhilaration filled her as she felt the early morning breeze moving past the outer entrance to her weyr, playfully sifting through her brown hair. It was so amazing to live so high in the air, and yet more wonderful to think that soon, she would be able to soar from the heights upon her own Dinaedth’s back! She looked down, and could indeed see the dragons beginning to gather. “Quickly, or we’ll be late!” She exclaimed suddenly, realizing that there were an unsettling number already present, and waved to Dinaedth as she moved back into the small weyr, heading for the door. Dinaedth launched himself off of the ledge, gliding down to the lake.
Shikai quickly exited, and stopped suddenly as her eyes caught sight of a harness, hanging on a peg just outside the door. Excitement filled her and her eyes lit up. At last, her own harness! She took it in her hands, carrying the sturdy leather with her, and it served as a physical reminded that the moment was real, she really was soon to fly with Dinaedth.
Shikai raced across the bowl as fast as she could, which wasn’t a great speed considering the harness she carried. However, she made it to Dinaedth’s side just before B’kay began his speech. She turned her full attention to him eyes glowing with anticipation.

Kimber could only stare for a long moment when the blue actually sniffed her and the lowered his head for a scratching. Oh Emberlyn was going to be so jealous!
She slowly reached up and respectfully rubbed the older Blue's eye ridges and then lightly down the ridges on the front of his face. Oh, but his hide felt like fine silk. She shook her head and smiled as she kneeled next to the older woman "Her name is Dazzle," she said, patting her hip to call the canine close.
Dazzle wagged her tail happily and came to her mistresses side. She sniffed toward Gaylen curiously and stepped closer so that she could reach her more easily.
Kimber looked at the tangle of straps , absently chewing on her bottom lip thoughtfully. She nodded a bit as Gaylen demonstrated the problem. "Would it help if I undid this buckle?" she asked as she reached out to carefully undo one of the many buckles, unsure if that would help or hinder.
"My name is Kimber, I just recently arrived here to be a candidate," she said cheerfully "My twin sister is here as well, but she doesn't really want to be," she explained. True to harper form she was ever the gossip and curious to learn anything worthy of such.

B'kay nodded acknowledgment of C'lyn's offer to the Weyrlings. "Thank you, greenrider C'lyn," he called out and then turned to the young riders and their dragons, "Please observe carefully and courteously. Once you believe you've memorized the assembled harness, come this way, and Syth and I will demonstrate how the harness is properly placed on your dragons."
===
Gaylen smiled at the young woman, and reached the free hand to stroke the silky hair on the hound's head. Kimber and Dazzle ... she would try to remember that, as well as the girl's kind assistance.
When Kimber mentioned that her sister had been an unwilling candidate, though, her thoughts clouded. "Your sister does not wish to stand on the sands?" she asked quietly, incapable of understanding how that could be. Why would someone unwilling even be at the weyr ... and, worse yet, who on Pern wouldn't want the chance to Impress a dragon!? Wasn't that every child's dream?
Kimber's attention to the straps distracted her from those concerns, however. When the girl mentioned the buckle, Gaylen blushed ... for yes, the entire predicament suddenly became clear. How could she have missed that?
"Oh," she said quietly, hoping no one but Kimber could hear. "It appears to be buckled wrongly. No wonder.... Yes, dear, if you would be so kind?"
Distress, awareness of her disabilities, regrets, played upon the old healer's face, and Alabanth crooned softly and caressed her back with his velvety muzzle.

Kimber smiled and carefully undid the buckle, tilting her head to look up at Gaylen "Well, she wants to stand on the sands, its just that she fears she isn't Dragon rider material, not that she'll ever admit it!" she said with a soft chuckle.
Dazzle licked Gaylen's hand as she enjoyed the petting. Kimber smiled and sat back on her heels, frowning slightly as she noted the older rider's distress. She bit her bottom lip for a moment "I'm sure its easy to do that, especially if your in a hurry to help the weyrlings. I hope you'll help teach me when the time comes," she said cheerfully, smiling brightly "I would be honored to have a rider such as yourself teach me," she said honestly.

Gaylen was as touched by the canine's caress as by the young girl's kind words. She couldn't help but smile, and the smile spread to a soft chuckle. "Dearie, I have all I can do to help myself these days, but thank you very much."
Her thoughts were interrupted by B'kay's next words.
===
"If you've had a chance to examine the assembled harness on the noble Greylith," he said, scanning the group to see if all of the weyrlings had gathered, "Please turn your attention here. I will assemble Syth's harness several times ... to be sure to give everyone a good look at how the pieces go together. It might benefit you to take your own harnesses, and examine them as you observe."
He began then to slowly ... far more slowly that he would normally ... assemble the leather straps of Syth's large harness, glancing up to be sure the young riders were paying attention.
===
Gaylen, feeling more confident than she had in a while, thanks to the proximity of her new helping hand, began to shadow B'kay's moves on the much smaller harness of her blue. As she worked the straps, she glanced at Kimber, inviting her with bright green eyes to lend a hand if she wished. After all, the girl would likely be assembling her own dragon's harnesses before long.
Yes, Alabanth said, rumbling contentedly as Gaylen tossed the neck straps over his ridges, I hope she will Impress easily, too.

B'rec's eyes were locked on B'kay's hands, his own hands slowly moving in the air in repetition of the bronzerider's directions. The bluerider narrowed his eyes against the brightness of Rukbat's rays as it began to rise higher, concentrating with all of his might on memorizing the pattern. He wished to complete his harness correctly the first time without further aid, if that was possible. It was very complicated work...
When are we going to flyyyyy?
Hush, he chided, frowning slightly, though not irritated. I'm trying to figure out this harness so that we can fly safely.
Why? Might we be in danger?! Dagonth didn't like the sound of that at all, as he swung his head around to lock whirling eyes upon his rider.
Not if I can learn this properly... B'rec replied, sparing a smile to reassure his blue.
Oh ok. There was a pause. Are you learning it then? B'rec merely grinned, giving his dragon playful nudge before placing his attention fully on B'kay again.
