It was early morning and Kasanis jumped off Patience. He had just come back from running her around and now he had to do his chores. He lead Patience into her stable and brushed her up before doing his daily chores. He smiled while he worked and whistled quietly. He got the Herdbeast in before he went to wash Patience quickly, before Caltrain had seen him. The sun was still rising up on the horizon when he was done washing Patience. He rested under a tree that was near by.

A lead was tugged on gently but firmly on a black and white runnerbeast, who jerked back his head and glared. The girl frowned at him and reached forward to rub his snout, but his head yanked out of reach. "Cut it out, Crusader!" the Beast handler scolded. "Come on!" she urged, pulling the lead once again. Finally, the stallion huffed and plodded along behind his owner.
It was a nice day, and Aylana wanted to give the runnerbeast some exercise so he wouldn't terrorize the stables. She lead him out into an open area and had him stay still. Just as she was about to mount, her gaze caught another handler sitting under a tree. She paused, looking at him curiously, before returning her attention to her runner and tried to get him to let her on. For some odd reason, he was NOT in a mood to ride that day, and kept on dancing out of his way. Since she was trying to mount, she couldn't hold the lead down to make him stay still.
"Shard it, Crusader, what is your problem today?" she exclaimed in exasperation.

Kasanis was sitting under the tree just hagging out. Then he saw another handler struggling with a runnerbeast. He sighed and walked over to where the handler was. She said something in exasperation, but he ignored it.
"Hello"Kasanis said. "That's a stubborn runner you got there!"
"Want some help with that runner?"He asked.
His arm suddenly started to burn.
**Great!** He thought.
"Ow!" He said quietly, and hoped the girl hadn't heard.
He winced a little and held his right arm, but he still tried to smile all the same.
"What's your name?"He asked the girl.

Caltrain stretched his arms over his head ... a long night tending a difficult herdbeast birth had left him stiff and sore. Feeling somewhat grouchy, he stopped short as he came around the corner toward the stables and saw two of the newer handlers with their runners.
Once again, he wondered at the wisdom of allowing people to bring their own runners, especially when he'd learned that one of them was a stallion. Ravyna's Renegade was a bit possessive of his herd, and he hoped the little bay wouldn't cause any trouble with the new arrival.
Still, though ... he stood back, hoping he hadn't been seen, and eyed both of the new runners ... they were fine beasts, and it wouldn't hurt to add new blood to the herd. Especially if his and Ravyna's plans to hold race meets with the local holders panned out. The mare gleamed, obviously just bathed, in the morning sun, and that black and white stallion had quite a nice spark to him.
Caltrain began to feel a bit of remorse. The Weyr had brought him some fine help, and he'd been so busy he really hadn't even had a chance to get to know them.
Hitching up his breeches and straightening the still-bloody tunic as well as he could, the little Beastmaster limped toward Kasanis and Aylana.
"'Allo, there, good morning!" he called out as he approached. "We finally get a chance to say hello properly!"

Aylana stopped as the other handler noticed and started speaking to her, even approached her. She looked up and watched him as he came over.
"Want some help with that runner?"
"Sure, thanks," she responded with a slight smile, then fell silent again as he seemed to wince at something. He rubbed an arm, but continued on as if nothing had happened. A confused look shaded her gaze, but she just shrugged mentally and went along with it.
"What's your name?"
"Oh, I'm Aylana," she said to his inquiry and glanced over to see their "boss" approaching. Crusader snorted and pulled on the lead, jolting her attention to him. "Calm down, boy," she soothed, running her hand down the side of his neck like she did when he was a young colt. Gradually he calmed just as Caltrain approached them.
"Hello," the girl said to his greeting, turning towards him. Crusader huffed and pulled his back slightly, his most courteous gesture that he could muster. The beast handler rolled her eyes at him and smiled slightly at the man.

Caltrain glanced down at the blood on his tunic, and, taking note of the stallion's nerves, stopped just short of the little group and stood downwind of the runner. He chuckled.
"Fine beast indeed, but we don't want him to worry that I've been slaughtering innocents this morning," he grinned, and the gap in his teeth where one had been knocked out by bullies stood out starkly. "We've got a fine, healthy heifer-calf to show for all this mess, but I apologize for my appearance."
He brushed the wayward sandy hair out of his eyes, and it promptly fell right back into them. Those odd eyes looked over both runners critically, and one could see the approval in them.
He scrutinized the stallion. "Does he have some mountain strain in him? He looks like he's got some really good endurance." He then glanced up at the mare who belonged to the other handler. "And your girl? What's her background? You're Kasanis, right?" His gaze shifted back to the young woman. "And Aylana?"
He crossed his arms and gave the runners a broad smile. "So, let's see what these two have in them. Don't let me interrupt your exercise, mount on up!" He laughed and hoped the two new handlers would be as eager to show off their runners as he was to see them run.

"Kasanis straitened when he saw Caltrain come over.
"good morning Master!"Kasanis said politly and smiley.
"Yes I'm Kasanis"Kasanis replied.
"Oh...Patience here? her backround? Well She is strong and willing and she has done alot for me and she keeps me going"Kasanis blurted, then was ashamed that he had said a lot.
"Get on her sir? What about other work?" Kasanis hesitated.
Kasanis jumped on her and right when he took the reins and waited for her master to say ra! she sped off and ran in a big circle. then after ten turns, she gently stoped in the middle and waited patiently for her master to get off.
"was that good enouph for you master?"Kasanis said panting but smiling all the way.

"She's an agile little thing, isn't she? Nice muscle, good control," Caltrain said as he ran a practiced eye over the mare. This was, after all, part of the "work" ... even though the runner herds may not be traditional Weyr material.
He nodded to Kasanis. "She's definitely an asset -- as the herds increase, they're eventually going to outgrow the pens inside the bowl. I was thinking of moving excess stock, breeding animals, to some large meadows toward the center of the island, and we'll need trusty runners to help us move beasts back and forth to the Weyr. Has she ever done any herding work?" He turned to Aylana, as well. "And your stallion?"

Kasanis nodded at what the master was saying. Patience was staring at Aylana's runner behind her master. Kasanis smiled. "Yes, of course my runner has herded! and a very good idea, moving the herd to the large meadows!"Kasanis said. "Patience and I will do what ever you say!!!!" Kasanis smiled.
His arm once again burned. This time it was bad. **Hopfully it'll be done hurting when he herds beasts again. and hopfuly I won't get another wound.
He winced. "OW!" he whispered.
He knew from his own foolish heart that it probably will happen again.
It suddently stopped hurting and smiled like nothing had happened.

Caltrain was about to smile and relay his pleasure at knowing the mare was experienced at herdbeast work, when he saw Kasanis wince.
"Are you all right?" he asked, his odd flecked eyes showing sincere concern. After all, good, experienced help was a treasure, and he wanted to be sure his people took care of themselves.
