The Weyr awoke to a normal day. The sky was blanketed in a gray mass of clouds that blocked Rukbat from sight. The land was lit only by the most diligent of rays penetrating through the wintery cloud bank. The air was chill, with a bit of a snap, but there was no wind.
A drudge arose early, as she did every morning, to carry a familiar tray, set with klah, a redfruit, and a soft, fresh slice of bread to the largest weyr in Araelen.
She entered quietly, as always, to set the tray on a finely carved wooden table. And yet, there was already a tray there. A tray with klah, a redfruit, and a hardened slice of bread. The tray she had carried yesterday. Untouched.
The drudge was still for a moment, her mind working as slowly as ever to solve this mystery. And then, she did something daring.
She entered the sleeping chamber, hesitant but unable to resist. It was empty. She crossed the sleeping chamber, peering into the Bowl entrance to the weyr. The dragon couch was empty as well.
The significance of this empty, empty weyr took a moment longer to sink in, and then the drudge fled.
The Headwoman struggled to make sense of the frightened drudge's incoherent speech. When the message was finally perceived, a Weyrwide search began. Every dragon and every rider was questioned in the hope that someone would know what had happened.
But no one did.
Sitareh and Aviciath were gone.
All threads started after this point will be affected by this plot twist. The Weyr is currently leader-less, as M'kel has been stripped of his rank without a Weyrwoman to secure his position. The two Jr. Weyrwomen of Araelen's first clutch will preside over official matters until the new leadership is determined, when one or the other of their golds rises. Whoever is caught first, Lefayeth or Gwynevith, will decide the Weyr's new leadership.
