Seventy five turns ago, or Seventh Interval turn 1932 to the rest of the Pern world, Viola Weyr was founded by one exiled and broken hearted goldrider. She was forced to build her legacy on stones from the other side of the world of her lover, A'dor. She knew she'd never see her weyrharper lover again, and the only thing she had of him was her memories, and their young son, Aldoravn. For her him she was brave, and built out of a hallow volcano a home. For the first ten turns dragonriders transferred from all the usual Weys on Pern - Fort, Benden, High Reaches, etc. Then, after time had passed, it seemed that the world forgot about Viola deep into Southern Continent. Even secret messengers ceased once A'dor died 25 turns after Viola was founded. Then, the goldrider decided, the rest of the world should be dead to Viola. Soon the north was forgotten, as no generation since then has been taught of their origins.
In the sixty-ninth turn of Viola's existence, the reigning queen Esmereth rose into flight, only there was something different about this flight. She flew in shadow, for an eclipse darkened the skies around Viola. She was caught by a young, and possibly the largest bronze at Viola, Mortenth, and from that pairing produced 13 eggs including a gold egg.
Superstitious people murmured about how the flight had been doomed, and how the clutch must be tainted by the sheer freakish weather. Esmereth's rider, they say, went mad after that, believing that she had finally really failed her Weyr. Yet, come hatching day, nothing disastrous had happened. Each of the eggs hatched perfectly formed and normal. Then the queen egg slowly rocked. She took the longest to hatch, and some pessimists said she never would, but finally the gold hatched. She was perfect! She was wonderful! She was marked in black? Yes, the golden queen had strange markings on her wingsails, down her chest, and a streak between the eyes. Such a strange queen, and people had their doubts.
It has been nearly five turns, and the Viola's 75th anniversary gather is quickly approaching. Some think that Weyrwoman Imani will announce her retirement, leaving TWO young goldriders to duke it out for Weyrleadership. But the younger of the two golds, the Shadow Queen, has never risen in 5 turns, seemingly taking her time, and many say she will not rise. And the other, nearly 15 turns, has been rising like clockwork, and the Weyr can all depend on her rising in late summer and clutching in early fall.
Who will rise first? Will the "mutant" queen give her nay-sayers a run for their marks? It is late spring, and summer is just around the corner, the other queen has the perfect opportunity to rise. The Weyr is split between loyalties, some for tradtion, some for change. Political rivals arise from the ashes of a past era to see who will lead Viola into a new regime...
