((Because unless Meah and I can't count, there's still a shortage of wher candidates.))
Character Name: Kolibri
Age: 17
Gender: Eunuch, so technically male, but assumes a female gender role
Preference: None of the above
Previous Position: Farmer
Current Position: Wher Candidate
Appearance:
Kolibri is small and thin, with an almost delicate-looking bone structure. She doesn't carry much, if any, extra weight on her, and everything about her just seems to be narrow. Her chest is completely flat, as per her biological gender, only adding to the appearance of tininess. It doesn't help that her hair absolutely dwarfs her, a mass of tight, waist-length curls the approximate color of klah. It usually appears to just be dark brown, but in bright light the redder undertones are clearly visible.
Her skin is somewhat dark, and like her hair has faint reddish undertones. Her eyes, as well, are a dark brown.
She is, though small, rather well-proportioned. Her feet are narrow, with high arches, and her hands have long, thin fingers. She keeps her nails filed extremely short, preventing them from getting caught on anything.
Due to an incident very early on in her childhood, Kolibri lacks most of the genetalia that would usually be found on people of her biological gender. What remains is small, malformed, and nonfunctional.
Her voice remained high even through puberty, never dropping at all. She sounds rather like a child when she speaks, lacking the hormones that would have changed her voice. It's a pleasant singing voice, if slightly unusual, and well into the soprano range.
Personality:
Deeply spiritual and with more than a healthy dose of superstition, Kolibri is more often than not the odd one out in a group. Whether it's her penchant for speaking of the feelings of inanimate objects, or because she so often tells people that "death is only a small part of our journey to enlightenment", she seems to be viewed with some suspicion by her peers.
Kolibri is... unusual. She truly believes that everything, from humans and dragons to trees an even the rocks, has feelings and are capable of expressing those feelings in some way. The planet itself is alive, gifting them with fair weather when it is pleased and disaster when it is not.
Towards other people, she is almost always polite and happy. She's quite social and manages to make friends with most people that she meets, mostly because she'll never say a harsh word to anyone. Even when she disagrees, she'll calmly and in her quiet voice explain why she doesn't feel the same way, neatly sidestepping most especially thorny issues. However, while this unsuppressable optimism may be endearing to some, it undoubtedly annoys others.
She absolutely abhors violence of any form, and can often be caught quietly apologizing to her food for eating it. She loves pretty much all small animals, from felines to fire lizards, to even the 'pests' that run about. Life fascinates her, and she brings that to her work with the plants. Death, however, seems repulsive. Not the act of dying itself, which she believes to bring a thing closer to enlightment, but the husks that are left behind one something dies, the bodies, she finds repulsive.
History:
Kolibri's birth killed his mother Konara, and his father, Antoniri, couldn't help but think how lucky he was that his firstborn, of the woman he had loved, was male. This was a boy, to be a man, that would carry his name proudly. Of course, he promptly found another woman, but she could never replace Konara. Antoniri and his new wife vowed that Kolibri would grow up to be the finest man that ever lived.
Funny how the best-laid plans tend to fail. Kolibri was just over a Turn old when he'd pulled one of the family's canine's tail one too many times. Annoyed, the canine turned and snapped at him, but with the boy being such a small target to begin with, things went wrong. Through some horrible chance, the canine's teeth met the flesh at his groin, and effectively castrated him.
Antoniri was devastated. His son could never be a man, but then, it was lucky that he hadn't bled to death. Life was far preferable to that so, gritting his teeth he began to dress his son in dresses and pretending that she had never been a boy.
And so Kolibri grew up, for a long time not knowing that she originally a he. As soon as she could, she started out helping her father with the plants that they grew, herbs and root vegetables bred to be hardy enough to survive even in Shattermaw. In that happy early childhood, she grew to be awed by the miracle of life in those plants, and in time she came to notice just how much around her was alive. The clothes she wore had been given life in the loving work of a Weaver and the woman (who was not her mother, however much she tried to pretend to be) who sewed them together for her.
She had to figure things out eventually, though. Though not one of the brightest people, it was difficult not to notice that she was... different... from other women. Of course, Antoniri finally had to explain, and Kolibri spent the better part of her fourteenth Turn trying to figure out what, exactly, she was. She'd been born a man, but she didn't feel like one, but then she wasn't really a woman either.
In the end, it was her little half-sister who decided things for her. "Mama," she'd said to the woman who was not Kolibri's mother, "'Li is the best sister ever because she pulled the splinter out for me! See?"
Kolibri was a sister, not a brother. And, that settled, she continued living life as she always had.
At least until the Searchrider came and took her with him to the Weyr. It was a new place, an unfamiliar one... and Kolibri was hopefully to find a place there. However, things don't often go as planned. Sitareh, ever on the lookout for something that's just not quite right, noticed quite quickly that Kolibri was not exactly what she pretended to be. And so, either repulsed or simply annoyed by the deceit, Kolibri was sent off to the darker corridors where the wher candidates lived.
