Character Name: Therrius (pronounced TARE-EE-YUS)
Age: 31 Turns
Gender: Male
Preference: Females
Previous Position: Apprentice, Journeyman, and Master Harper.
Current Position: Masterharper of Pern
Appearance: Standing at an extremely impressive 5’4”, Therrius has a personality large enough to make up for his lack of height. His eyes are a vivid green in colour, often compared to the sea in their hue, and are always intriguing in their gaze. The laughter in his eyes is often matched by a curiosity that reflects his interest in all matters, large or small. His jaw is rather angular in nature, and his nose is somewhat pointed, though not snootily so. Short, light brown hair that cannot be tamed falls neatly on his forehead and protrudes from the rest of his head at sometimes awkward angles. His smile is easygoing and charming in nature, shared readily with all. Therrius is not muscular in build, but his slender form is strong and wiry.
Personality: There are few people who can be referred to as genuine in their dealings with others, but Therrius is one that not many have ever doubted in his fervour. He abhors cruel acts, though he can appreciate a creative prank, and his generosity when it comes to family is unlimited.
This kindness extends to others in his life, though he is unable to form as deep of bonds as he’d wish. Underneath his outgoing, cheerful exterior is a brooding insecurity borne of abandonment. Although he’d never speak of it, Therrius fears the loss of the relationships in his life. He clings fervently to those who are dear to him, and he seeks approval in all means possible. It is difficult for him to bond with others, for he doubts his ability to maintain the bond. Thus, Therrius is one who is afraid of rejection and betrayal, resulting in a distinct lack of trust in all relationships.
Despite the abandonment he has had to face in life, Therrius attempts to turn this dark fact around. He instead chooses to use this fact to his advantage. With no idea of the trades of his parents, Therrius can truly be of all trades and none, allowing him to possess a certain objectivity in others’ eyes.
History: An early morning at the Harper Hall dawned with an unusual sight. A young kitchen worker, Briussi, exited the kitchens to fetch water for the morning’s cooking, only to discover a young toddler abandoned on the Hall’s steps. Although wrapped in a fur, the young boy was pale blue with cold, and she immediately rushed him inside to the kitchen’s fire. The boy recovered well from the ordeal, and his age was judged to be around one Turn, though they could never be certain.
His bright eyes and charming smile ensnared Briussi’s heart, and she insisted on claiming him as her own. Her husband, Therret, a Journeyman Harper at the time, was rather reluctant at first. They already had a daughter around the lad’s age, and he worried that the two wouldn’t be able to provide for both. However, the young toddler’s engaging personality convinced him, and they named the boy Therrius.
It seemed the boy had been destined for the Harper Hall, for he spoke not a word for nearly a year. Instead, the toddler contented himself with humming and garbling in musical tones, ignoring all attempts at encouraging him to speak. Although concerned at this inability, or lack of desire, to learn to converse, his parents persisted with him. Finally, at the suspected age of two Turns, Therrius began to speak.
As it became obvious that the young boy was a natural born storyteller, Therret often joked that the lad had merely been building suspense in waiting so long to speak. At this, Therrius would always giggle, delighting in such a novel idea. It was true, though, that he adored storytelling. His subjects were never false, though he loved to embellish his tales, and his sister, Briya, was an eager listener. The two bonded easily, so close in age, and the pair became nigh inseparable.
His family never hid the truth from Therrius, for they thought it unfair to the boy to lie about his past. He was constantly reassured by both parents and sister that they loved him dearly, even if he did not share their blood, and this seemed enough for the lad. As the Turns passed, Therrius was always cheerful and outgoing in nature, rarely finding time for misery.
However, the impact of his abandonment was great. Therrius never allowed it to show, though for more reasons than the pain it might cause his family. He feared that if he was ever visibly dour and depressed about the matter, his family would grow weary of such moods and be rid of him. Having been abandoned by one family, it seemed perfectly plausible that this one might choose to do the same, if they found him undesirable.
Determined never to lose this new family, Therrius was always overly generous. He allowed his sister to take the lead in games, and he never took more than he needed. Even when apprenticed in the Harper Hall, as he was destined to be, Therrius allowed the other boys to prank him with impunity. It never bothered the lad, though, for he felt it was a small price to pay for appreciation and friendship.
His sister was apprenticed with him, and they continued to spend much of their time together. Therrius and Briya often spoke of finding a fire lizard clutch, for their Master Harper father did not want to spend the precious marks on buying them eggs. “If you ever find a clutch, you can Impress every one,” Therret had assured an eager eyed Therrius.
Little did Therret know, Therrius would actually be lucky enough to find a Clutch one day. Wandering through the Southern jungle on a free day, while Briya was in vocal lessons (she was quite the singer!), Therrius stumbled upon a hissing golden queen. A mound of sand indicated her Clutch location, and a bag carried just for this reason was soon filled with eggs, despite the many scratches and bite marks it brought him.
Proudly, Therrius marched back to the Hall. There, the lad announced that he would keep an egg for himself and give one to Briya. The rest would be sold to bring the family marks. His father had been extremely impressed, encouraging his son to choose the largest egg in hopes it may hold a gold. Instead, Therrius chose this egg for Briya, keeping a smaller one for himself. The reason he gave was that blues and greens had better singing voices, but truly, it was merely another example of the lad attempting to be modest and generous to win his family’s favour.
Briya’s egg turned out to hold a handsome bronze, while Therrius’s did indeed hold a green. He named the charming fire lizard Symph. Surprisingly, Therrius found a quality in his bond with the fire lizard that had been lacking in his human relationships: she would never leave him. This boosted the lad’s confidence a great deal, and his cheerful demeanour was easier to come by.
Briya and Therrius walked the tables together, to their parents’ delight, and both excelled in their musical studies. Briya specialized in voice, as hers was so superb, while Therrius focused on writing music, as well as playing the flute. He had a true talent with words, thus composing numerous little ditties and even grander pieces.
At the age of 26 Turns, Therrius found himself facing a predicament. Briya was being courted by another Journeyman Harper, and Therrius feared he may lose his sister to this other man, though not in the passionate sense. His insecurity was overwhelming, and Briya soon became the only person aware of this problem of his. She sought answers from Therrius in his depression, and he finally confessed. Shocked, Briya committed herself to reassuring her brother that he could never lose her, nor his family. It aided him greatly, though it could not heal Therrius entirely.
His dark mood in these times nearly cost him a rise to Master, but he and Briya, once again, walked the tables together. The other Masters found Therrius to be an impassioned young man, and he firmly believed that more women should be allowed into their ranks, for Briya was among the few. His strong sense of equality and justice, coupled with his undeniable musical talent and friendly nature, won him the title of Masterharper of Pern upon his predecessor’s early death. Therrius was only at the young age of 30 Turns at this time. Since this appointment, Therrius has strived to be an objective, approachable representative of his craft.
