Welcome to Syeira Weyr. One of the few remaining weyrs on the Southern Continent. There are only two of the original Northern Weyrs remaining, but the two continents have no contact with each other, having their own problems to deal with. The Fourteenth Pass is full of dangers for Dragonmen and their bonded, but they still fight and do their duty. The grubs that once populated the Southern continent have all but disappeared for some unexplainable reason. Storms often blow up without warning, making Threadfall all the more dangerous. Yes, Threadfall is still a threat despite the valiant efforts of those long gone brave souls that tried to divert the Red Star away from Pern with the help of AVIAS. The efforts did divert the Red Star, but in the wrong direction. The passes are now longer and the Threadfall closer together and heavier. While the intervals are shorter.
The Lord Holders, though indebted to the dragon riders as always, feel that it was the fault of the dragons and their riders that the Red Star passes closer now, that they some how planned the outcome to be this way. It is harder to get the Lorder Holders to deliver the tithes to their respective Weyrs. Only a few of the Lord Holders are grateful to the few remaining weyrs, but they must be careful in how they show this loyalty or they could be in danger from the other Holders.
With the Lord Holders so dispassionate about the Weyrs it is getting harder and harder to have enough candidates for each clutch. Few candidates sadly means more hatchlings going between because they can not find their life mate. Because of this some Search Riders have taken to snatching up those that their dragons indicate and stealing them away, willing or not. This of course, only adds to the tensions between the Weyrs and the Holders. Though if the candidate happens to impress a high color it does mollify the holders for a while.
The Craft Halls still help the Weyrs out the best they can. The Weyrs are thankful to the Crafters and often send them high ranking dragons for transport to where they need to go while they send the lower colors to the holders that are not helpful to the Weyr. The craft halls allow the Weyr to perform Searches frequently amongst their apprentices and journeymen in hopes of keeping a hatchling from going between, and the Weyr is more then willing to allow those Searched from the craft halls to continue their training.
Mutations to the original colors are more frequent. It is believed the mutations were caused by a disease that the dragons survived. The color mutations also express themselves in the firelizards, many healers believe that the disease had started in the fire lizards and then spread to their larger cousins since it is now known that the dragons were indeed related to the lovable fire lizards.
Sadly Syeira just recently lost the Senior Queen and her rider, elevating Junior Queen Faerith and her rider Cailet to Senior Queen and Weyrwoman status. The two are still grieving over the loss of their superiors, but are doing their best to fill their shoes. Cailet and her Weyrleader, J'red, have been doing their best to persuade the Lord Holders to be more understanding and more willing to give their tithes to them. Unfortunately, the delegations are not going well and many fights have broken out between young dragonmen and holders. Cailet has even tried to give gifts of fire lizard eggs to appease the holders, but to no avail.
Syeira Weyr is located in a deep cove, the steep cliffs housing the weyrs of the dragons and their riders. The cove has only one entrance to allow tithing trains through, a rocky path through thick jungle. Aside from that the only entry to the weyr is dragon back. The waters of the cove are calm, but protected by a ring of rock out away from shore, making it impossible for a boat to navigate.
