Character Name: Tarren
Age: 13
Gender: Male
Preference: Straight
Previous Position: Apprentice Farmer
Current Position: Candidate
Appearance: As Tarren has yet to hit his growth spurt, he is still relatively small and youthful in appearance. His skin is tanned from farm work, although not enough to really be called dark. A few freckles are spattered across the bridge of his nose and under his eyes. Tarren’s hair is a medium shade of brown; darker than his skin, and cut in a way so that each strand is quite long, but they hang in a rounded manner about his head so that his hair does not pass the nape of his neck. His eyes are a light, yellowed chestnut-brown, and are large and well-shaped, giving him the impression of innocence. Much to his dismay, he has a button nose that is often called ‘cute’, and doesn’t lead him to be very masculine in appearance. While his face was very round when he was young, Tarren’s face has since become a more angular, although it still has a softness to it. His eyebrows are the same dark brown as his hair, and make his eyes very expressive. Hard work outdoors has strengthened his muscles, although his childish body does not show them well. However, he doesn’t look skinny, but well-built and thin.
Personality: The best phrase to use to describe Tarren is ‘happy go lucky’. Like many young children, he tends to be a bit selfish and naïve, and always carries an unfailing optimistic outlook on life. Tarren has a great deal of energy, and is very prone to getting into mischief. He loves a good prank, although he is not mean-spirited and wouldn’t do something knowing that it would hurt someone, unless they happened to do something to make him angry. This is unlikely, as, while his emotions can change fairly quickly, he seems to bounce back well from insult and injury. Tarren is not the strongest boy, but he enjoys using his wits and harmless pranks to combat his opponents. He would much rather persuade someone to do something that to force them, and he can be quite convincing when he wants to, although adults are more likely to see through his acts. Tarren has a problem of forgetting to plan ahead, however, and often he becomes immersed in creating a new prank and fails to consider the consequences ahead. He is somewhat accustomed to minor punishment, and takes to it well after about fifteen minutes of sulking. He usually employs all his efforts into whatever he does, be it a chore or his latest prank. Tarren is friendly and easy going, and tends to make friends easily. However, forging true, long-lasting friendships is difficult for him, so he is usually without someone to share his innermost feelings with. Tarren isn’t always as happy as he lets on, but he tends to hide his emotions behind a brightly smiling mask, never, and in fact, afraid to, reveal emotions that some may consider ‘weak’, such as fear, sadness, and pain. He laughs everything off without thinking, even if he is deeply affected by it. As he grows, he is becoming increasingly self-conscious, although he would never admit it.
History: Tarren was born the middle child in a family living at a small cothold on the Southern continent. His father was a farmer, and his mother assumed the traditional roles of cleaning, cooking, and bearing children. Tarren’s father, Tavin, was extremely hidebound, and believed firmly in the traditional roles of women as wives and servants, and men as workers. He respected only those men who worked ‘hard’, and with their hands and backs, rather than their minds. Tavin was fiercely proud, and expected much of his young son. His two older daughters were raised to eventually be married off, and he expected his only son at the time to learn the farmercraft well, and eventually take his position. While never abusive, Tavin was a stern father, and taught Tarren without words that emotional displays were weak, and unacceptable. He grew increasingly exasperated with his child, who always seemed to be getting into trouble instead of growing into a solemn, hard-working farmer. While Tarren did do his work diligently, he always knew that the farmercraft was not for him. He had a bright and eager mind, and wished to do something that would allow him to learn and to use it, and even more, he wanted to be somewhere where he would be accepted for who he was, instead of expected to be what he did not wish to be. His wish was eventually granted with the return of the dragonriders, and Tavin, having since been given another son, one much more to his liking than Tarren, reluctantly agreed to let Tarren try his luck as a Candidate on the sands.
