Character Name: Treylis (Pronunciation: TRAY-liss)
Age: 19
Gender: Male
Preference: Females
Previous Position: Lord Holder’s Son
Current Position: Candidate
Appearance: Treylis stands at 5’ 11”, tall and imposing but far from a hulking giant. He has a lean build, evidence of his active and energetic lifestyle, with broad shoulders to top it all off and add to his commanding presence. His hair is dark brown, nearly black, and is precisely trimmed to a short and conservative length. It is an obvious reflection of his personality, for his life is built around structure and regime. Treylis’s eyes are light brown with flecks of honey-yellow in them. His gaze is stern and assertive, daring any to contradict the son of a Lord Holder.
Accompanying these bold eyes are strong, hawk-like features. His nose is shaped somewhat like a beak, though it is not overly large and is not out of place in his face. He has a square jaw and a small, dark goatee. Treylis would likely be perceived as attractive if his face wasn’t so hardened by stress all of the time. When the young man does smile, it softens the shadows under his eyes and brings light to his dark façade.
Personality: Cool and collected, Treylis is the epitome of a Lord Holder’s haughty son. His quiet yet strong presence is easily noticed in a room, and his dark-haired, strapping stature only adds to this intimidating figure. Although some may mistake his manner for cold and standoffish, it is rather a result of his focus and self-control. In order to be a proper Holder, he believes that he must be reserved and unemotional, rarely allowing time for ‘happiness’ and ‘fun’.
In other words, Treylis is far too serious for his own good. Every moment of his day, be it brushing his teeth in the morning or conversing with an important member of the Hold, is given the same amount of attention to detail, which, of course, is immense. His goals are clear in his mind, and Treylis is obsessed with achieving them. He has decided upon this idealized role that he must fulfil and has fixated upon it with all of his energy. He was likely spiralling out of control back at his home Hold, losing every piece of himself in the struggle to become the ideal, and the shock that was caused by his entrance into candidacy may be the only thing to have saved him.
The one shred of his life that was allowed to be pure and untroubled was his time spent riding runnerbeasts with his siblings, for the runnerbeasts liberated him like nothing else could. Only with them did Treylis feel truly comfortable and relaxed. He never been able to relate to people as he did to runnersbeasts, likely because he had never let his guard down around people. However, with those gentle creatures, Treylis did not feel threatened nor have the need to keep up airs. After all, they were not going to be impressed if he came strutting into the stable.
The few occasions in which Treylis does lose his cool reveal truly how strong his emotions are underneath his rigid façade. He is passionate and fierce, defending his siblings, Hold, and honour. He is a fighter and hates those who do not stand up for themselves. Once he has made a decision about anything, he will fight to the death to see it through. The only thing Treylis needs most is someone to break through to him and teach him the simple pleasures of life, for his days would no longer be as bleak.
History: Treylis was born to Lord Telryn and Lady Aralis of the prosperous Dawnfire Hold, in the foothills along the western mountain chain of the Southern Continent. He was the first child of the young couple, and Telryn was extremely pleased to have secured his Holding so quickly. It turned out, however, that the Lord had had nothing to worry about, for the couple’s fertility was not an issue. Not even two Turns later, Lady Aralis bore Telryn another son. The boy, Aclaryn, was close enough to Treylis in age that the Lord Holder decided he need not restrict himself to the unpredictable eventual nature of his first son. He would raise both to lead a Hold, and when the time came, choose the one who had proved himself more capable and worthy.
This early arrival of a sibling for Treylis meant that his mother’s attention was soon diverted, resulting in the need to compete with his brother. The Lady Holder had plenty of Ladies-in-Waiting to assist her with raising the boys, but nothing could replace a mother’s love. Luckily, she did not dote overly on her newborn, so Treylis did not feel entirely abandoned.
In early childhood, the two brothers were too young to recognize the rivalry their father had placed them in, so their interactions were innocent enough. They would likely have even been termed friends in the early years, going on many a spirited adventure and prowling about the Hold. There were clashes, of course, but this was typical for two children with dominant personalities.
Life changed once again with the arrival of their sister, Selra, four Turns after Aclaryn’s birth. While Lady Aralis had ensured her attention was not diverted fully to Aclaryn at his birth, this was not the case for Selra. The Lady Holder was delighted to finally have a daughter after six Turns of only troublesome, boastful sons to contend with. She doted on little Selra above all else, dressing her up and showing her off. Although this might have been considered a rejection for the boys, they, too, grew very fond of their young sister and didn’t begrudge the attention overly.
As well, there were other matters to distract Treylis from this disgruntlement. He had reached an age at which Telryn considered him ready to begin schooling. Although the Lady Holder’s attention for her sons began to fade, the Lord Holder’s only began to bloom. Thus began the Turns of extensive education that would prepare Treylis to be the potential successor of Dawnfire Hold.
Over the next Turns, Treylis adhered untiringly to his studies, determined to learn more information and at a greater pace than his brother. What had begun as a friendly, schooling competition became a fierce rivalry as the boys aged. Treylis committed himself wholeheartedly to the education, and he never shirked in his studies. He became obsessed with Hold duties, following his father everywhere and attending all important meetings he was allowed in. Thus, it was quite upsetting for the young lad when his carefree brother scored comparably with him, as Aclaryn was off fooling around with other Hold boys most of the time.
Their personalities began to diverge drastically at this point. Gathers were an excellent opportunity for Treylis to formally introduce himself to important members of the Holding, or even of other Holds, in order to build connections and gain respect. Aclaryn, on the other hand, always had a girl hanging off of each arm with no apparent care for Hold business on such occasions. Even still, Treylis was often shocked to hear the other Lord’s mentioning their appreciation for Aclaryn’s friendly conversation, and they often joked about his wily charm. Treylis received no such compliments. Once, a drunken Lord even prodded the 16-Turn old lad and asked him why he didn’t loosen up more.
This was all highly disconcerting for a boy as serious as Treylis. Aclaryn seemed the exact opposite of him, and yet whatever his brother was doing, it seemed to work. This caused the elder brother to doubt himself almost constantly, for he was trying his hardest to be the ideal young Lord Holder, with attention to detail and focus on Hold duties, but Aclaryn was praised for his personable nature regardless of his lack of serious attitude. How could one possibly have fun and be a good leader?
The one pursuit that continued to be a source of enjoyment for the brothers to share, devoid of the stress of their competition, was riding runnerbeasts. Treylis was an avid rider, and it was only on runnerback that he truly felt free. Only then could he be himself, without fear of being judged and analyzed.
However, even this source of relaxation and bliss was soured for the boys, for one day, when out riding with Selra, her runnerbeast pitched forward and threw the 11-Turn old girl into a rocky streambed. It was the dry season, so she was at no risk of drowning, but the young girl had hit her head on the rocks and was bleeding, though not profusely. Treylis immediately leapt to her side, doing what he could to bandage the wound while hollering at his brother to go for help. Aclaryn, afraid for his sister, rode at a dangerous pace towards the Hold and ended up being thrown from the saddle himself. Luckily, the boy only twisted his ankle and was able to get home without further ordeals to send out help.
Although Aclaryn harboured resentment that he had been told to leave while Treylis got to stay with their sister, Treylis was furious at his brother for risking Selra’s life as well as his own. If he had died, after all, who would there have been to send help? This was a breaking point for the pair, for their rivalry had finally gone beyond friendly competition. Although companionable at times, the brothers no longer tolerated each other to the same degree, and numerous conflicts soon arose.
When their Father was given five fire lizard eggs, one for each of his family members, Treylis watched with hungry eyes as the Lord Holder selected an egg for each of his children. The boy couldn't help but gaze suspiciously at Aclaryn's egg, for it looked larger than his own. It was no matter to Treylis that his sister received two, nor that hers was definitely larger than either brother's. When Aclaryn's egg Hatched a green, Treylis was extremely indignant. Of course his brother would receive the green, with the ability to produce more eggs either to gain favour by doling out to minor Holders or to Impress more of the fire lizards. Still, this resentment faded quickly, for Treylis adored his blue's personality and wouldn't have traded him for a silly green, even if she was egg-producing.
Treylis was paranoid about his ability to secure the Holding, for he had worked his whole life to become Lord Holder, and he dared not think of any alternatives. Thus, when he and his brother were Searched quite forcefully (he came out with a black eye and smarting pride), his whole life seemed momentarily shattered. All of his plans, everything he had been working toward, was ruined. It left him in a state of shock that lasted for some time, but this was soon consumed by anger. He was furious at the dragonriders for tearing apart his life, and Treylis was determined to escape the Weyr to travel back to Dawnfire Hold.
