Character Name: Dristian
Age: 28 Turns
Gender: Male
Previous Position: Lord Holder’s Son
Current Position: Lord Holder
Appearance: Dristian stands at an appropriately intimidating height of 5’11”. He took after his father in build, with broad shoulders and a wide form. Still at a fairly young age for Holding, Dristian has not yet achieved the rotund stature his father was famous for. Although Dristian has the strength and physique to participate in the main Craft of his Hold, fishing, he chooses to spend most of his time on land, galloping runnerbeasts across the length of his Holding to inspect crops and the harvesting of trees. It is only because of his occasional interest in participating in strenuous harvests and Craft-related activities that he has maintained his healthy shape. Dristian’s eyes are a deep, piercing brown, and his black, shortly cut hair only emphasizes this dark visage. He has a rich, tanned complexion from Turns spent in the Southern sun, and his hands are rough from his participation in various work.
Personality: Dristian was always a meticulous and practical youth. Even at a young age, his mind was attuned to the workings of a Hold, at the insistence of his father, and Dristian found it fascinating to analyze the otherwise dull Records of past crops, successes, and failures, in comparison to current standings. To the disgust of his younger brother, Dristian took these comparisons as an opportunity to identify the points that may have made one year more successful than others, and recommended changes to his father on these counts. His success in such endeavours greatly boosted Dristian’s confidence, giving him an overt arrogance in the presence of lesser beings.
The youth became coldly calculating, and after tasting the power and esteem granted to him after proving himself to his father and fellow Holders, Dristian wanted more. The boy quickly recognized the actions and situations that would further improve his standing, and many of these turned out to be proving his brother to be less capable than him. He took every opportunity to demonstrate this fact in his father’s presence, boldly confirming his future inheritance in his father’s pride.
History: The son of Lord Driton and his first wife, Sania, Dristian was born the first son of the pairing, and turned out to be the only son, as Lord Driton bored with this wife and chose to replace her not four Turns after Dristian’s birth. Only at the young boy’s vehement and fiery insistence did Driton agree to keep the unappealingly aging woman around, but she was forced into a life of servility as the dishonoured first wife whose only tasks were now the raising of her son and as a Lady’s maid to the new Lady Holder. This cruel and offhand dismissal resulted in Sania’s bitter and serpent-like avowal to do everything in her power to guarantee her son’s rise to greatness.
The new, extremely young wife, soon bore Lord Driton a second son, called Darrol, much to the disgust and horror of Sania, who saw this new lad as a threat to Dristian. Unfortunately for the second wife, the pregnancy was a terrible ordeal at her young age, and though she conceived again barely after her son was born, her miserable life was filled with disappointing and painful miscarriage after miscarriage. The few healthy children she was able to bear were daughters, and she was disgraced in the eyes of those at court. Though Lord Driton was greatly displeased with her inability to bear him more sons, she was still attractive enough to keep around, so he took mistresses instead of remarrying once again. It was a constant paranoia for the young, often miserably sick, Lady Holder, as she could never be certain which Lady’s maids were added to her service as mistresses to their Lord, and which were actually meant to serve her.
Sania often took advantage of and perpetuated this misery, bluntly stating and pointing out when one of the Lady’s maids suddenly became pregnant, though she too warily watched these pregnancies and the following births as possible threats to Dristian. Fortunately, no new possible heir was declared, as Driton died a sudden and violent death, trampled by runnerbeasts while overseeing his prize herd’s movement from one field to another. Though the possibility existed that Dristian had many other half-brothers and sisters, without the Lord Holder’s confirmation, they could not claim his title.
Thus, Dristian, at the age of 20 Turns, rose to power abruptly. His mother was immediately relegated her due honour and declared Lady Mother, no longer a servant to the replacement wife. This woman was near the end of another horrid pregnancy, but died along with the child, her first son since Darrol, in birth. The reasons for this were never publicly disclosed, though it was assumed that after her Turns of suffering through pregnancies, her body finally gave up. This theory was perpetuated by the new Lord Holder, and all of the ‘Lady’s maids’ were dismissed, along with their various brats.
Throughout the assumption of his title, and in the time that followed, Sania was a constant presence at her son’s side. Though he was not a puppet of his mother’s ambitions, Dristian did consider her advice attentively, as he had through all of her Turns at his side. He recognized that her time at court and shrewd nature had imbued her with the conniving thoughtfulness that could secure one’s power. Now that his father had been removed, though accidentally, she whispered to Dristian, the remaining threat to his power must be deposed. Darrol, now 18 Turns, was well-liked by the Holders and may be able to secure himself a sufficient following to replace his brother as Lord Holder. The possibility and the necessary actions that must be taken to remove this threat were carefully considered by Dristian. As cold as ever, Dristian let no affection towards his brother hamper his decision as to what must be done. Whether he was capable of affection or not was in itself a mystery. Even as Lord Dristian began forming the plans, summoning a possible man who could do what was required, Darrol died an unfortunate death at sea, swept overboard in a storm.
Surprised, Dristian found that he was relieved at not having to remove his brother himself, but instantly his ambitious mind turned to other possible threats. As the Turns wore on, he became aware of his mother’s returned flamboyancy, her flirtations and conniving at court. It almost seemed that, in an effort to show up the man who had abandoned her, Sania had adopted his ways, delighting in the sudden desirability her position brought. But Dristian would have nothing to do with the possibility of more half-brothers, even if they were not sired by the previous Lord Holder, and Sania found her suitors mysteriously disappearing one after the other. Horrified, she realized too late, that the son she had borne and raised to be as calculatingly cold as herself, was now turning that cunning against Sania herself. In one of the more extravagant of her tantrums, she was dismissed from court and sent to an isolated Hold at the far reaches of Celos Sea Hold’s borders, but even there, though she believed herself forgotten, Sania was always watched.
Without his mother as a distraction, Lord Dristian turned to the more tedious tasks of affirming his position. Turn after Turn, his Steward insisted that the one chore left to the young man was to secure himself a childbearing wife and to sire many sons. Still, a bit of the paranoia rubbing off on the son unknowingly, Dristian feared the threats this may bring, both in his chosen wife’s ambition, as well as the sons that he might bear. So, he put off the matter as long as possible, and was still unmarried when the dragonriders appeared in the sky above his Sea Hold. Suddenly, matters that had seemed important before were now diminished in the face of this new threat. Dristian was determined to secure his position, no matter what world these new dragonriders created.
