(Minor modification made after the History was posted)
Application:
Character Name: Caltrain
Age: (candidates must be between the ages of 12 and 22) 19
Gender: m
Previous Position: (if applicable, what was your character’s job before becoming a candidate, dragonrider, etc.?) runnerbeast exercise boy and assistant trainer
Current Position: He hopes to be taken on as Weyr beast handler/runner herdsboy/trainer, and possibly find himself as a potential candidate.
Appearance: (include height, eye colour, hair colour, etc.) Appears to be about 5'3”, but it's because he stands stooped to one side ... Caltrain would be almost three inches taller if he were able to stand upright. A virus-caused fever during his mother's late pregnancy caused complications with the fetus, and Caltrain was born with one leg shorter than the other, and has been sickly much of his life. He has shining burnt sienna eyes flecked with amber ... but there is a haunting quality about those eyes that makes people uncomfortable. They are sharp and piercing, as if they see through any masks people wear. His hair is wavy and untamable, sandy-blonde with streaked highlights from being in the sun and he wears it long enough to just brush his collar – that is when it's not blowing all over. He would almost be attractive, but for the fact that his nose has been broken a few times under the fists of village bullies. For the same reason, when he smiles, though his smile is bright, there is a gap in his upper teeth off to the right side where one was knocked out. He is narrowly built, though with a strength that belies his slight frame – a fact which made him valuable as a runnerbeast assistant.
Personality: (is your character protective, easy-going, fun-loving, solemn, what?) Caltrain is quick-minded and wary. He trusts very few people due to experiences which have taught him to be this way. He never strikes first, however, and cautiously gives people a chance to show him whether they are fair or foul. Sadly, due to his deformities and size, he's run up against more than his share of the foul. He remains quiet, watchful, until he gets to know people, and usually sits back and observes when in a crowd. If the crowd joins in the singing, however, Caltrain's clear tenor voice can be heard rising above those near him, a fact which often startles listeners, who whisper, “I didn't know Runnerboy could sing!”
History: (include parents’ names and ‘jobs’, character’s location growing up, exciting or dreadful events that occurred to your character that aided in shaping their personality, etc.) Caltrain was born to a blacksmith, Goran, and his wife Lucil, in a plains-edge village a half day's dragonflight from the Weyr island. Born stunted and twisted, it was thought the boy child would die, but he had an inner strength that sustained him. He grew, though not well, and he did not exactly thrive, but he was just too determined a spirit to give place to death. He began his life a weakling with a handicap, which made him the brunt of bullies in his village.
Unable to run from his tormentors, Caltrain learned at a very early age to ride, earning the respect of the local runner breeders, and was apprenticed at a very young age to a prominent race beast trainer, Pornel, several days hard jog from the coast. Barely eight years old when he started exercise riding, Caltrain quickly earned the nickname “Runnerboy”. He was fairly happy in his young life till his mentor, Pornel, was killed in a track accident. The man hired to take his place had four large sons who took a quick dislike to the “crippled Runnerboy” and tormented him day and night. The fact that their father still saw the boy's value as a rider angered them further, and their teasing became vengeance.
After several years of their torment, Caltrain had had enough, and, fearing for his life, ran from the beasthold, took temporary work aboard a small fishing vessel, and eventually found himself at the gates of Araelen Weyr, hopeful of finding a position among the herds, and where he could watch the comings and goings of every young Pernese' dream-beasts, the practically mythical dragons.
Position in Family: (oldest child, youngest; if creating an important figure which requires application in the Special Requests section, leave this flexible [don’t force only child unless granted request]) Caltrain was the middle child of three, with an older and a younger sister. Though his mother loved him, his sire was always disappointed in his deformities, and was somewhat relieved for the opportunity to apprentice him out to ride runners as a young child. Caltrain doesn't blame his father, though, for isn't it ever man's dream to sire strong sons?
