PROLOGUE *********** It was a calm clear day and not a single thing dared stir in the little suburban homes of London. Gwen glanced up and down Parkfield avenue or at least what she could see from her window. The rows of houses were calm and quite, as they usually were. The only noise Gwen could hear was the television in the living room which was currently the news. The weather was on. “It may be dry and sticky now folks, but I can assure you, there will be a storm.” The weatherman said. Gwens' mother huffed. “It’s not going to rain anytime soon.” Her mother said, and a grunt, that was Gwens' father, was heard. Gwen sighed as she stared out the window once more. Now I suppose you’re wondering why on earth she was staring out the window, as no normal child would ever be doing such. Well you see, Gwen was not a normal child, not at all. She had a very rare and strange ability. For you see, Gwen could talk to animals. Not matter the animal, she could talk to it. But she kept it all a secret, for if anyone ever saw her, well, people would talk. And that isn’t something that Gwen wanted. Gwen noticed a change in the weather suddenly, as if it converted out of nowhere. A storm started. A heavy downpour had started to fall when Gwen noticed something. There was a girl in the middle of the rain storm, and she was dashing off somewhere, and although Gwen couldn’t see it very well, she could tell a man was following her, with some odd stick in his hand.
CHAPTER ONE ************** Gwen was staring at the letter in her hand and at the train station. The ticket clearly said Platform 9 ¾ which, as she noticed, clearly wasn’t there. She sighed and noticed people were quite looking at her. She wasn’t that odd. She was in normal clothing, jeans and a t-shirt, and she had a cat in it’s cage on her trolley, but other than that, nothing odd. She then realized what they were staring at wasn’t her, but the people behind her. There was a girl who had bubble gum pink hair, cut short. She had on wizarding robes, as did the two people behind her, obviously her parents. She scowled at them. “I can get on the bloody train without your help father!” she said as she pushed the trolley ahead of her. “I’ve only seen others do it a million times!” she walked briskly away from them and realized, she couldn’t get that far because Gwen was right there. “OI! What do you think you’re doing? Move, or I can’t get through the blasted gate!” she said, her voice was actually sweeter than her words. It sounded almost like soft bells or chimes. Gwen just opened and closed her mouth. And the girl sighed and snatched the ticket out of her hand. “Stupi-OH! Let me guess, you don’t know how to get on?” she asked, much kinder now that her parents had left. Gwen nodded. “Yes, I’m new to this.” She said. “I j-just can’t figure out where, um, the platform is.” Gwen stuttered, looking closer at the girl. The girl had an upturned nose, and large bright blue eyes, which contrasted with the pink hair. She was small and scruffy looking, but still pretty all the same. The girl smiled. “’Kay, all you do is run straight into the wall, don’t worry, you’ll go through.” She quickly added, noticing the sheer look of horror on Gwen's face. “And when you get to the other side there will be a train, here, watch me.” She said and she raced off into the wall and disappeared. Gwen sighed and looked straight ahead and started running. She closed her eyes at the last second and when she opened them again, she was in front of a train, and there were people everywhere, and not a one of them with bubble gum pink hair. She sighed and got aboard the train. She noticed several students and, she even saw a student with a toad. She frowned and continued on. She noticed all the compartment were filled, but one. She slide in and noticed it was bubble gum hair! She had her feet propped up on the other seat and was looking in the mirror at her face and hair. She suddenly closed her eyes, looking as if she was trying to remember something, and suddenly her hair was long and a light blonde. Gwen let out a gasp. “Oh my gosh! Your hair!” she said, and the girl looked up. “Yes, I’m a megamorphmagus, it means I can change my appearance at will. You aren’t going to let that cat out are you? I hate cats.” She said and huffed. Gwen shook her head and sat down. “Good. I’m Kitty McSpell.” She said and extended her hand. Gwen took the hand, shook it, and sat down. “Erm, so then. Have you been to Hogwarts then?” “Nope, never. I’m like you, a first year.” She said kindly. Gwen suddenly realized she didn’t tell this girl her name, and felt quite embarrassed. “I’m Gwen Violtenta.” She said and looked at the ground. Once again there was silence. Kitty stared out the window at the rushing trees, houses, and once in a while a cow. A knock came at the door and both girls looked at it, it opened to reveal a women with the lunch trolley. Kitty smiled and got up as Gwen did and went to get food. Gwen stared at the food and wondered why there was no M’Ms, Snickers, or any other decent candy. Rather, there was Chocolate Frogs, Every Flavored Beans, and other various things, not at all appetizing, finally she noticed something that looked edible, and took a pumpkin pastry. She sat down and soon after Kitty followed with her arms full of candy. Gwen made a face at her and ate her pastry. Kitty noticed and laughed. “What? Not that hungry? I am. I think I’ll eat a chocolate frog, but I hope I don’t get a card I don’t have, that be terrible.” She said and noticing Gwen’s eyes growing wide she laughed again. “Gwen, they aren’t REAL, there fake frogs. Chocolate shaped enchanted frogs, so be careful if you take one, they might hop away.” She said and Gwen smiled. “Oh thank GOD. Well, I guess I’ll take a frog, it doesn’t seem to bad.” She said and ate it. They had so much fun eating and laughing, and bonding, that they didn’t notice time fly by. Once they saw that the train was slowing down, Gwen quickly changed into her uniform, as Kitty was already in it. She sighed as she reached for her trunk, but never got it because a voice came on. “All students must leave their items and luggage onto the train. Please wait until the train come to a complete stop before getting off. Have a wonderful year.” A soft voice said. Gwen blinked and smiled as Kitty got up, stretched and walked out of the compartment, and Gwen followed. “So What other houses are there?” she asked. “There’s Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, and Ravenclaw, plus Slytherin.” Kitty said and hopped off the train as it stopped. There was a voice that could be heard over all others. “FIRST YEARS, FIRST YEARS OVER HERE!” It was a booming voice belonging to a large man in all aspects, with a beard and beady black eyes, almost like beetles. Kitty and Gwen walked over there and noticed the boats. The man smiled. “Alright, First years, hop in the boat, and well head off to the school.” He said. “My name is Rubius Hagrid, but you can call me Hagrid, alright, we all set? Then let’s go.” As the students got in the boat. Kitty and Gwen were in a boat with a boy, reading a book and a girl with bright red hair. They soon made it up to the Castle, and Gwen let out a tiny gasp, as it was the most wonderful thing she’s ever seen. Hagrid knocked on the door and a strict looking women came out. “Ah, the first years.” She said. “Very well, come with me.” She said as she turned around and led them inside. Gwen wished she had a a million eyes as she looked all around, but missed quite a bit as they walked off. They soon got to a room and McGonagal smiled. “Sit down. You will soon be put into a house. A house here at Hogwarts is like your family, you will eat with your house, take classes with your house, and you will hopefully earn points for your family. Each of you will be given or deducted points based on your actions. The house with the most points at the end of the year wins the house cup. I hope you contribute to your house.” She said and left. Kitty and Gwen looked at each other, now seated on a chair. “How do you think they sort?” “I bet it’s a test.” Were only some of the loads of conversations. Gwen sighed and wished the women would come back. And soon she did. She got them and took them into the Great Hall. Gwen noticed that it was such a large room, and the celling was nothing but sky and stars, almost as if there was no roof. She also noticed a stool with a hat on it. It was such and ugly hat, and the other students noticed too. Suddenly the brim opened at it started to sing, not just talk, but sing. “Oh you may not think I’m pretty But don’t judge on what you see I’ll eat myself if you can find A smarter hat than me. You can keep your bowlers black, Your top hats sleek and tall For I’m the Hogwarts Sorting Hat And I can cap them all. There’s nothing hidden in your head That the Sorting hat can’t see, So try me on and I will tell you Where you ought to be. You might belong in Gryffindor, Where dwell the brave at heart Their daring, nerve, and chivalry Set Gryffindors apart; You might belong in Hufflepuff, Where they are just and loyal, Those patient Hufflepuffs are true And unafraid of toil; Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw, If you’ve a ready mind Where those of wit and learning, Will always find their kind Or perhaps in Slytherin You’ll make real friends, those cunning folk use any means To achieve their ends. So put me on! Don’t be afraid! And don’t get in a flap! You’re in safe hand (though I have none) For I’m a Thinking Cap!”
The hall burst into applause as the hat finished the song. Gwen sighed a sigh of relief, oh thank GOD she wouldn’t have to do any magic, only put on a hat. Kitty smiled and whispered. “See, it won’t be so hard.” McGonagall held a long scroll and started reading off names. It seemed to go by fast, and in alphabetical order. Some when into Hufflepuff, some into Ravenclaw, one went into Slythrin, and that was a small very pale boy, whom was called Draco Malfoy. Gwen looked at the table that he went to then her attention went back to the hat, as it was the guy who was in the boat with her. “McHopper, Cloud!” There was a pause as he sat waiting, the hat over his head. The hat finally called out – “Gryffindor!” And so Cloud became the first new Gryffindor, and he went over as the Gryffindor table bust into applause. “McSpell, Kitty!” came the call and Kitty walked up there, a tad bit pale, and Gwen watched. It seemed to take forever before the hat called out – “GRYFFINDOR!” And once again the table clapped, however, Gwen noticed some other students looking surprised. Some more people went by, and the other girl who was in the boat, Amy Weasley, was put into Gryffindor, and then it was Gwens turn. She sat on the stool and heard the hat yell – “GRYFFINDOR!” Gwen smiled took the hat off and ran off to sit next to Kitty, quite happily as some people shook her hand. Professor McGonagall put the scroll up and took the Sorting Hat away after the last person was called. Albus Dumbledor had, by now, gotten to his feet and smiled at the students. “Welcome!” he said. “Welcome to a new year at Hogwarts! Before we begin our banquet, I would like to say a few words. And here they are: Nitwit! Blubber! Oddment! Tweak! Thank you.” And he sat down. Food appeared on the table and Gwen and Kitty happily dug into it. Gwen swallowed and smiled at Kitty. “I’m so happy we both got into the same house! I can’t wait!” she said excitedly. Kitty nodded her mouth full of potatoes. She swallowed and smiled as well. “Oh yea, now we can cause all kinds of trouble!” she said jokingly. Once everyone was full Dumbledor stood up again. The hall fell silent. “Ahem – just a few more words now that we are all fed and watered. I have a few star-of-term notices to give you. First years should note that the forest on the grounds is forbidden to all pupils, and a few of out older students would do well to remember that as well. “ Dumbledor said looking in the direction of the Weasly twins. “I have also been asked my Mr. Flitch, the caretaker, to remind you that no magic should be used between classes in the corridors. “Quidditch trials will be held in the second week of the term. Anyone interested in playing for their house teams should contact Madam Hooch. “And finally I must tell you that this year, the third-flood corridor is out of bounds for anyone who does not want to die a very painful death.” Gwen laughed, but she noticed Kitty didn’t. A few others did as well, but it soon stopped. Dumbledor smiled once more. “And now, before we all go to bed, let us sing the school song!” he cried as, with the flick of his wand, ribbons flew out of it and formed words. “Everyone pick their favorite tune,” said Dumbledor, “and off we go!” The school started to sing the song:
“Hogwart, Hogwarts, Hoggy Warty Hogwarts, Teach us something please, Whether we be old and bald Or young with scabby knees, Our heads could do with filling With some interesting stuff, For now they’re bare and full of air, Dead flies and bits of fluff, So teach us things worth knowing, Bring back what we’ve forgot, Just do your best, we’ll do the rest, And learn until our brains all rot.”
Everyone finished at a different rate, and finally only the Weasly twins were left singing at a low funeral march. Dumbledor conducted their last few lines and once done, sent everyone off to bed. Kitty and Gwen walked away and followed the other Gryffindors to their bed chamber. Once there it was lights out, and Gwen, who had taken the bed above Kitty said goodnight and went to sleep. Kitty sighed and went to sleep herself.
