"Eww, that'd be like touching a baby butt." Degellin exclaimed jokingly to Hunter, absently rubbing his chin self-consciously. Well it wasn't /completely/ soft. He satisfied himself with the idea that he could 'sense' some facial hair getting ready to grow. He'd just wait it out.
The prankster raised his brows in surprise as Kitari showed off the calluses on her hands. "Well, that about settles it, you're definitely not like those other girls." He confirmed, half reaching up to touch the calluses but stopping himself before that and putting his hand back down. No facial hair, no calluses or scars, there seemed to be a lot Degellin hadn't experienced yet.
However, he was positively delighted at Hunter's reaction to his 'craft', eyes lighting instantly. "Well you know, old fashion stuff." He explained with a shrug of one shoulder. "It's more fun that way; seeing if you can get away with the oldies. Bucket of water on a partially opened door, laces of different shoes tied together, that kind of stuff. And I haven't gotten caught once" in the weyr. Because there had been no jokes pulled yet. But these two didn't need to know that. As far as everyone here was concerned, he was on a clean slate.

Hunter tilted his head at Kitari's comment "Bad luck? Distracting I can see, but I don't see how it could be thought bad luck, but then again every craft has its own beliefs about things," he said with a smile.
He looked back toward Degellin and smiled lopsidedly "Like I said some people like it, but prickles feel nice too," he said, a bit of a blush coloring his cheeks for a moment before he shook it off. He leaned forward and peeked at Kitari's hands, nodding his own hands were callused from holding runner beast ropes, but not quite like hers "Scars from lines or hooks?" he asked curiously.
He tilted his head and glanced up at Degellin and laughed "Now I have done the shoe laces tied together before. But you've not been caught here? Thats good, I wouldn't want to think what kind of punishment one would get for causing pranks, but then again the chance of getting caught makes things more interesting," he said with a wide grin.

Degellin's reaction to Hunter's statement confirmed Kitari's belief in his prolonged youthfulness, and she couldn't help smiling fondly, as if he was some younger brother. As much as the young boy joked, she could see a deeper consideration in his eyes and the way he rubbed his chin. Everyone had to grow up eventually, as strange as it may feel, but hopefully he'd be able to keep some of his carefree and jovial spirit. It was cheering to be around.
The responses to her demonstration of her hands were rather pleasing, though she reflected that it was quite un-ladylike to boast of such things like one of the lads. Thus, Kitari determined to do it more frequently. Degellin's confirmation made her grin, and she withdrew her hands.
At Hunter's strange smile, unusual words, and blush, Kitari raised a brow, contemplating him. Yes, this combined with his reaction to the prospect of pursuit by a flock of females was beginning to suggest that his interests lay elsewhere. Although many men aboard the Dawn Star had spoken with derision over this sort of thing, she had noticed a few even there eyeing their fellows. As she'd been a person to criticize herself, Kitari felt no dark feelings towards those with 'different' preferences.
"Both," she stated in response to Hunter's query. The lads' conversation shifted to the topic of pranks, and the girl rolled her eyes playfully. Boys would be boys. "Why did you leave your Crafts? I mean, dragons are certainly exciting, even if we'd thought them all dead, but personally, I wouldn't have risked it if I'd felt secure on my ship."

Degellin's eyes widen slightly at Kitari's admission that both lines and hooks had given her scars. "/hooks/?" He asked almost weakly, looking a little pale. He looked away, his mouth tugging down at one corner. "That couldn't have been pleasant." And that about summed all that up.
"Punishments." Degellin said dismissively with an exaggerated role of his eyes. "That's exactly my point: if you don't get caught, there's nothing to worry about." He said with a devious little grin. "And!" He added, thumping a fist against his knee for emphasis. "There's nothing like knowing you've gotten away with something extra tricky."
The lad tilted his head with a 'why wouldn't I?' expression at Kitari's questioning why the boys left their crafts. "A change of pace, I guess." He said with a shrug. "Everything's just so /boring/! I can't find anything worth sticking to. So I thought, well why not dragons? For more than the obvious reasons, it's something /brand new/!...or...well, new to this time period anyway." He finished with a grin, his eyes twinkling with suppressed enthusiasm. "I mean, why pass up an opportunity like /this/ one? Honestly."

Hunter winced a bit as Kitari admitted that some of the scars were from hooks "Ouch," he said, nodding in agreement with Degellin's statement.
He arched an eyebrow at the other boy's dismissive attitude toward punishment, but couldn't help but grin at his enthusiasm "What is the best trick you ever pulled?" he asked curiously. He looked over at Kitari with a thoughtful look as Degellin answered her question, letting him finish before speaking himself.
"Well, I suppose me main reason was more curiosity then anything, but also they are bringing in herd and runner beasts and I can help with those. I don't know how many riders actually know anything about looking after these beasts other then to let their dragons eat them. I mean if they want to keep the food coming as one could look at it then they need to select breeders to have around just in case tithes to them can't be made or something," he said with a slight shrug then he grinned "And, yeah, well the excitement too," he added with a soft chuckle.

Kitari couldn't help but feel a swell of amused pride at the looks on the lads' faces. Unconsciously, she rubbed the scar on her leg. It hadn't hurt for ages, though it still tingled from time to time, and she'd never thought the shardin' thing would be something to be proud of later on. The Harper boy was definitely a soft one, although the Runner lad seemed a bit more toughened to the struggles of life.
Both seemed surprised that she hadn't been eager to leave her craft, but that was understandable. Neither had ever sailed the Pernese seas, cruising over sparkling, crystalline depths seen by so few, fighting through howling gales in an effort to make port... Kitari missed the excitement already.
As reticent as she was being about having left her ship, the girl had to admit that Araelen held a different kind of excitement, one nearly as intoxicating. The dragons that lined the ledges of the Bowl, more arriving every day, were as fascinating and beautiful as the most paradise-like cove. The thrill of riding dragonback had still failed to wear off, though Kitari felt guilt at the pleasure she had felt in it. Somehow, she felt that truly committing herself to this new life was betraying her past. This hesitation would likely wear off with time. After all, to have her own dragon...
"What colours are you hoping for?" she asked, a mischievious grin on her face. Such was always a matter of contention for lads, and she was curious how ambitious the pair was.

"My best trick...?" Degellin raised one brow with a superior smile. "Let me think..." He paused to leave them in a prolonged suspense, silently mulling over in his mind what pranks he'd pulled over the years. There was the time he'd slipped secret admirer notes in two journeyman's pockets, telling them to meet so-and-so in a place notorious for dirty things, only to find each other...Degellin had to suppress a snort of delight at the recollection of their faces when they had first seen each other. Then there was also the time he'd stuck half the apprentices' hands in water while they slept, resulting in more than one embarrassed face the next morning. However, that one didn't seem quite as glamorous.
But his best trick? The one to top them all? Well there really was none. Each had its own charm. And the harder he tried to single one out, the less they seemed to appeal to him, until he wasn't very proud of any of them. "Trade secret." He said at length with a mischievous wink. He definitely needed some new prank material...maybe it was just that he'd been so placid lately so as not to attract too much unwarranted attention to himself, else his first prank would lead the clues right to him.
Degellin listened quietly to Hunter's explanation, finding it a bit more admirable and logical than his own. But he brushed the thought away; he was probably still sore about the whole prank thing, and if he didn't have his bag o tricks, what did he have? He was able to lift his spirits again when Hunter agreed with the excitement, and he grinned in response.
"Oh I think I'm set for bronze." He replied at once, crossing his arms with a smug air before laughing it off. "Naw, I think I'll take anything." He admitted with a toothy smile. "Any dragon that can put up with me is worth it. Though I don't rightly think they'll have any qualms." He added brightly, looking very self-assured. "I mean, if the search dragon felt I had something in me, why wouldn't a hatchling?" His accompanying smile was rather impish.
