((I really encourage anyone else with new characters to join. Please don't be intimidated by the long intro! I just needed to tie some things up with my characters. This is pretty much a last-minute test-run for Jaylee before the Hatching. I'm sure there are a few of you out there who would like to get some action in before hand also. This RP doesn't have to go anywhere special, it's just to get the newbie charries interacting. :] ))
As Jaylee stared glassy eyed at the Lake, arms crossed securely and safely before her, she could only wonder numbly what the future had in store for her. She knew nothing of dragons, had not even considered what it would be like to live so close to them, and yet here she was being prepared to potentially get one of her own. Despite the warm air, she shivered. This was a waste. The concept of a dragon choosing her was as alien as the Thread that had recently begun to Fall again, and all she could do was hope helplessly that someone would return her to her home. The vague intrigue that the dragons held wasn't enough to distract her from reality. A life here would be strange and dangerous and very much without her dear dolphin companion Iggy. Oh Iggy! She hadn't seen him since her departure from Southern Boll Hold...
Jaylee tensed as a large shadow moved over head: another dragon passing by. Would she ever get used to that startling feeling? The bronze landed not far off, allowing a young man to hop down from his back. Jaylee quickly averted her eyes, ashamed for staring, but there was something familiar about the young man, like a distant memory tickling her subconscious...She kept candidly glancing over, pretending to be looking past him or perhaps admiring the intimidating creature beside him, until it finally clicked. With a strangled gasp, she took a tentative step closer.
"Fallen." The thin voice had no power nor command to it yet it still caught the young man's ear. Fallen had scarcely turned his head from Vicroth before a young woman was before him, pained amber eyes searching his own. "It is you." She murmured, one hand slightly raised, as though tempted to touch him but still uncertain.
Realization was slow to kick in. Fallen's initial reaction was to recoil from the close proximity, but Vicroth made a surprised noise, drawing on something from Fallen's memory that the weyrling himself hadn't tapped into yet. She has grown up. Vicroth said quietly, triggering the recollection. Fallen tensed. It was too jarring to see his old childhood friend here, while still imagining her as a young girl back at Boll. He struggled to find a word, something, as his brows pulled together in agitation. "Jaylee?" No, why would they bring her here? There was no time to dwell on the dangerous future ahead of her if she Impressed however, for almost as soon as the words were out of his mouth, the girl had thrown her arms around his middle, face buried in his shirt.
"We didn't know what happened." Jaylee sobbed, clinging tighter as though fearing he would disappear again if she loosened her hold. She shook her head, shoulders quivering. Feeling sick, Fallen carefully folded her up in his arms. Something wasn't right. He had left a note before he left, to assure Jaylee and Barsel that he was alright. He'd left it tucked in the hole of a tree outside his house, a place which they had regularly left messages for each other. Surely she would have looked there. Unless...in his minds eye, Fallen remembered the hawk-like eyes of his father watching as a younger Fallen climbed down from the tree. Had his father seen where they kept their notes? Fallen's face darkened. He wouldn't put it past the man to, in his almost certain embarrassment of Fallen's behavior, rid the boy of his last words to his friends.
Shaffit.
"I'm sorry." Was the tight response. As much as he wanted to console her, it had been too long since he left his old home behind, giving up all that came with it. He had made his peace, and hadn't expected to see Barsel or Jaylee until he mustered the courage to face his parents again. By then, he had reasoned, there wouldn't be such heavy emotions, only a sigh of relief at seeing his friends still whole and safe, assuming the years were kind. Did she really think him so weak as to be injured or worse on his own?
"It's fine. I'm fine. What are you doing here?" He said quietly, attempted to pry her arms loose so he could look at her properly. She really had grown up, though he supposed he had too. Gone was all the awkwardness that came with being a young teenager. Five years weren't a lifetime but neither were they a short span. Here before him was a young woman, cheeks rosy with poorly stifled tears and delicate hands clinging to his own with feeble dependence.
Jaylee gulped some air into her lungs, rubbing at wet eyes with the side of her arm. "A dragon came to the Hold." She explained, eyes down. She was Searched then. Why does she cry so? These are happy tears? Vicroth inquired, sullen at being ignored throughout the little reunion. Fallen looked over his shoulder at the bronze, smiling wryly. "Yes, happy tears, I should hope." When Jaylee looked at him in puzzlement, Fallen stepped aside to present her to Vicroth. "Jaylee, I'm sorry, but this is Vicroth. He was eager to introduce himself." The great bronze inclined his head as means of hello and tentatively reached his snout forward with glittering eyes. A little uneasy, Jaylee shuffled closer to Fallen, as though fearing the dragon might gobble her up if she left her old friend's side. Fallen had nearly expected Vicroth to bespeak the girl, such was his interest, but the bronze instead relayed. Please tell her that she should not cry. Happy times are for smiling, not for weeping.
Fallen hesitated before sending on the message, causing Jaylee to glance up first at Fallen then at Vicroth, a quivering, wary smile curving her mouth. She nodded silently, self-consciously tucking some hair behind her ear under the scrutiny.
All seriousness and otherwise attempts at geniality were shattered however when, quite unceremoniously, Jalyee's stomach growled. "Oh" The girl pulled suddenly away, self-consciously hugging her stomach. "Sorry." She mumbled, eyes flicking from young man to dragon, as though she'd just committed some sort of crime. Fallen, however, was glad for the more light-hearted distraction.
"Hungry?" Jaylee nodded mutely, head tilted down but eyes looking up sheepishly. Fallen scratched at the back of his spiky hair. "Come on then, let's get you something to eat." He gestured for her to follow. "Do you know how to get to the Lower Caverns?" Jaylee shrugged, mouth tugging at one corner.
"A little."
"I'll be back to wash you later, Vicroth, I'm sorry, heart." Fallen apologized to his bronze. The dragon only rolled his gently whirling eyes. I will survive. He said simply, though he couldn't hide the heavy dosage of jealousy at being put off for someone else. "I just have to...take care of this..."
"I can wait." Jaylee put in quietly, visibly put-off with the idea of upsetting the bronze or inconveniencing Fallen.
The young man regarded her for a moment before shaking his head. "No, it's fine." He assured her, offering a crooked smile that was about as sincere as Fallen ever got. "I owe you anyway." And before she could protest, he led her away, quietly occupying her with questions about the state of their old home and relatives. Fallen was surprised to realize he had missed them all more than he initially thought.
When they stepped into the Lower Caverns, they might have looked like a couple, if not for Fallen's reserve and Jaylee's timid demeanor. "Would you like some klah?" Fallen offered as they paused at one of the tables. Jaylee shook her head 'no' but Fallen seemed to know better, and gave her what was almost a smile before leaving to get some anyway. Jaylee rocked on her heels once, arms crossed before sitting awkwardly at the table, glancing about herself self-consciously. She must look so silly all alone like this right now. She hoped Fallen returned soon...
