Character Name: Delano (Delano: of the night)
Age: Roughly 20 turns
Gender: Male
Preference: Female
Previous Position: N/A
Current Position: Bounty Hunter
Appearance: When standing upright, Delano is roughly 6”1’ tall. He has chestnut brown hair that falls in large ringlets around his shoulders. His complexion is no longer fair, attributed to the many scars and calluses his body adorns. He has haunting green eyes that are set back into his hollow face. His jaw is slightly crooked from being broken. Delano is very broad and bear-like in his features. His everyday attire consists of a long, black leather jerkin, a travelling cloak, and riding boots. When wielding his sword, Delano wears his gauntlets, greaves, and a rapier.
Personality: Delano is a quiet character that draws his emotions inside of him. He hates the politics in society, but loves them at the same time simply because politics kills. He would appear to have a heart of stone. He is very cold, and likes to get straight down to business. Delano was never one for small talk and petty conversations. When he sets himself a goal, he converts all of his energy to that particular task until it is complete. He is loyal to no one. He is quite willing to stab his employer in the back if offered higher pay. He respects no one and is known for being merciless. Delano is also very vengeful. If cheated of pay he will hunt his employer down and force them to pay double or else a simple slip of a blade…
History: Delano’s past was riddled with misery, rejection, and failure. As a babe, Delano already created fear in his parents. When he was born, not a single cry tore from his lips as he was ripped from the warmth of his mother’s womb. Although this seemed strange, his mother, Taryn, insisted that it not be a bad sign and she accepted the young boy in a loving embrace and gave him the name Adair. Six turns later, on an ordinary day, Adair was helping his father, Acuzio, with an injured runnerbeast. Acuzio’s favourite animal had become lame and could barely stand. Acuzio was called away from the animal, briefly, to talk to a neighbour about the situation. At this point, Adair found a small blade lying on a table and snatched it up and went over to the injured animal. When Acuzio returned, he found the runnerbeast sprawled on the ground in a pool of its own blood. He found a long slit through the beast’s neck where the blood stemmed from and Adair with the blade that had the fresh crimson liquid covering it. Acuzio refused to listen to Adair’s feeble pleads. His parent’s locked him in the cellar until they decided what to do with him. In the end, without a word of love or parting, just disgusted and solemn faces, they gave him a cloak, a small basket of bread, and sent him away to live with a young widow in a village two days ride away.
Adair, feeling lost and betrayed, had no choice but to find refuge in the widow’s home. He soon found that the lady and he had much in common. They never talked about the bloody event that haunted Adair’s past, they just worked the fields and the gardens together, living off the earth with very little contact with the outside world. Adair grew very fond of the lady, fore she treated him like the son she had never been able to bear. She never chastised him for acting the way he did as long as he aided her with the farm. She even gave him a new name, Delano.
It had been thirteen hard worked turns since Delano had left the ruin of his parent’s home to stay with the widow, Mabel. The fateful day approached with no sign of the terror that would strike. Delano was in the small stable tending to the runnerbeasts and Mabel was weeding in the garden. Delano forked hay into the runnerbeasts stalls, completely oblivious to the oncoming disaster. Thread began spilling from the sky, pouring down on the earth, consuming everything in its path. Delano, not realizing the danger quickly approaching, started scooping water into the buckets for each of the runnerbeasts. Thread began falling nearer and nearer to the small farm. Mabel was outside, humming a small tune to herself, her back turned to the oncoming threadfall. It wasn't until one of the herdbeasts began bleating in agony that both Delano and Mabel noticed the swarm of thread heading straight for them. Delano stood in the doorway to the stable and peered out, looking for the feline that was terrorizing the herdbeasts. What he saw, however, was no feline ripping up a beast... but thousand of wriggling strands of Thread shredding the beast to pieces, engulfing it in mere seconds. Delano heard Mabel scream and looked to his right to see her scrambling through the garden, running as fast as her ancient body would take her. He began running to her, fear gripping his stomach and wrenching at his heart that began pumping twice as hard. But even as he ran, he knew he couldn't make it. The distance was too great and the Thread were falling fast. He skidded to a halt, screaming at Mabel to run. But it was too late... He watched her trip... She looked up at him, wet tears building on her lids. "RUN, DELANO! GO!!!" She bellowed at him. He knew he had no choice... he hated himself for this but there was no way he could save her in time. He couldn't disobey her final request. He turned around, looked back once over his shoulder to see her collapse on the ground just as thread began to fall on her. He yelled out in agony and disgust and bolted back to the stable to the trough that he had just been taking water from. He grabbed a hollow piece of wood that he'd been fashioning into a spout for the eavestrough, and jumped into the water sucking air through the spout while sinking as far down into the trough as he could. He could hear the muffled screams of the runnerbeasts as the thread began to break through the wood and sod roof. He watched in horror as some strands began falling into the water, slowly dying.
It was a long time before Delano resurfaced to see the absolute mayhem before him. The carcasses of the runnerbeasts and the herdbeasts that he had expected to see littered in stable and the pasture weren't there. The Thread had destroyed everything, leaving no sign that the beasts and his beloved Mable ever existed. Delano could do nothing but run. He ran fast and hard. He ran without turning to look back. He ran from his demons, his failure, his broken soul. He only stopped when he couldn’t breathe. He lay on the ground, heaving in his internal pain. His lungs felt raw… but not as raw as his heart. He half-expected to look down and see a hole in his chest where his heart had been torn out from his pain. Mabel… the dear woman who had given him a safe home… where he was not judged, just cared for like his parents’ never could. It was at this point, when Delano’s mind altered. He twisted his failure in himself to a loathing of those who had failed to aid him. The Dragonriders! They were the ones who had caused the death of his caregiver. They had ignored the threadfall! They could have saved Mabel! Delano clenched his fists and smashed them on the ground beside him. A burning sensation crawled up his throat and flickered in his hazel eyes. He would kill them… He would hunt them down. Why did they come back, anyways? Everything was peaceful before they returned… It seemed a dark cloud had grown over Pern at their arrival… A cloud that Delano wished to remove from Pern forever. Thus he became a bounty hunter.
