Little Wizzerd, finally satiated, had crawled inside Rannell's baggy tunic for warmth, and fallen asleep. The child, too, was dozing on and off, leaning against his auntie.
Auria was completely absorbed in her own darling Safari, whose appetite was slowing, and who was chirping sleepily in her arms.
Ranny's little voice surprised her, therefore, when it said, "Bad boy told a egg."
The child yawned and rubbed a sleepy eye with a sticky fist.
Aury looked down at the large green eyes that peered up through a shock of too-long sand-colored curls.
"What bad boy, Ranny? What did he tell the egg?" She wondered if the child's imagination had turned to story creation.
"No, no telled a egg, TOLD a egg. He TOOKED it. A geen egg." He pointed a chubby finger in the direction of the exit F'rallen had taken.
Aury eyed the child carefully. He certainly seemed sincere. And then, as she looked around, and noted surprise on the faces of many of the others who'd gathered for the hatching, she realized that her nephew was not making this up.
"A boy stole an egg?" she whispered, and wrapped an arm around the tot, out of some misguided need to protect him.
Safari chirped curiously, tilting his sapphire head to and fro. She stroked him with a finger tip, rubbing little eye ridges and the front of his face. "Don't worry, darling, you're safe," she said.
Ranny yawned again. "Wizzerd not 'cared. It okay."
The little green certainly wasn't scared, for she was sound asleep inside the child's tunic, perfectly relaxed.
She, however, found this new development most disturbing....

Amika was still breathing hard as she found an inconspicuous spot to lean against the wall. The fast run up those stone steps, coupled with pulsing excitement, had the girl's heart racing, and the bright colours of the eggs seemed to glow even more brightly because of it. The Wherhandler felt rather awkward amongst this crowd of Weyrfolk; she was very unused to seeing anyone aside from the other 'handlers. It was only at this point, when night met day, that everyone in the Weyr was awake, for a short time.
Thus, the girl knew she was quite lucky that the eggs had begun Hatching now. Otherwise, she likely would have missed it. And although she had questioned her eligibility for a fire lizard egg, something that one would think was reserved for those of higher status, she hadn't been able to resist marking her name down.
Other people, however, seemed determined to have more than a simple chance at Impressing. Even as Amika caught her breath, a young man came racing into the weyr, wove his way through the watching crowd, snatched an egg, and took off. The Wherhandler's jaw fell open in surprise, as everyone seemed too shocked to intercede. He had stolen an egg! That couldn't possibly be allowed...wasn't someone going to chase after him? Why--
Amika paused suddenly, disgruntled thoughts vanishing, at the sound of an insistent chirp from below. Her gaze dropped, and the girl's mouth opened in surprise. "Oh," she murmured, staring down at the dark, dark bronze who stared indignantly back. "Really?" was her next, breathless query, but the bronze seemed to be getting rather tired of waiting for the realization to finally sink in. He fluttered forward and began creeling loudly, pulling on her pant leg.
Immediately, Amika turned to a nearby onlooker, begging a piece of meat, and crouched to feed the glistening bronze. His chirping was replaced by a satisfied croon, and the meat began vanishing in large bites. The Wherhandler shook her head, still in shock, and began to coax the bronze onto her knee. He was so sweet! She gazed into his whirling eyes, running a finger along his proudly arching neck, and was unable to ignore the striking contrast between this perfectly-formed bronze and her own awkward wher. The girl felt awkward for thinking it, but the bronze was just such a darling...

Shandar’s hands were thrust into his pockets, for warmth in the cool air as much as anything. He had finally adjusted to a nocturnal life, helped in part by his previous life in which he spent several nights on duty with the other hold guards. All the same, this was still quite a change of pace.
The brown wher slunk along just ahead of him, the dark, red-swirled tail disappearing just around the corner as he and Amika turned back into the weyr. He cast a subtle glance over at the girl, noticing her yawn. Well, he couldn’t say he wasn’t tired as well; they had been on duty all night, their shift just ending. Strange how the traditional meanings of dawn and dusk had been inverted for them.
Shandar’s mind snapped to attention as he felt a burst of defensiveness and a ripple of hostility flood through the connection between him and Shask, and he lengthened his stride to catch up to his wher. His hand went immediately to the still-growing beast’s shoulder, which was raised as the wher growled, bristling, at the people in the hallway. Shandar communicated sternly to him to stand down, in that wordless manner he had learned to use. Shask’s growling reluctantly ceased, although Shandar could still feel the simmering disquiet in the beast. Whers weren’t so complicated, really; it had been little trouble for Shandar to adapt to that sort of communication. He had never been the most eloquent of people. Feelings he could understand, and be understood by the wher beside him. That’s just what they had, an understanding. A partnership. The two were of similar natures, and suitably matched.
He looked up at Amika’s exclamation, and Shask’s faceted eyes followed Amisk as the fellow brown started back toward the wher caverns. The firelizards, hm? Whatever had possessed him to stand for one, he couldn’t really say…they seemed to be quite a nuisance most of the time, but they had their uses. He secretly yearned to inquire about his sister Shanti’s condition from his father, as even though he was now busy caring for Shask (and what care he gave – attending to every possible need to raise the wher into a healthy and well-adjusted creature…as he had failed to do with Shanti) he refused to put his sister, or his guilt regarding her circumstances, from his mind. With a firelizard, perhaps, he could write a letter to his father. And Shanti always had loved firelizards – perhaps he could send the creature to her to visit in his place.
As Amika rushed off toward the cavern, Shandar turned to cast a hard look at his wher. Cavern, go. Now. He sent the images and the emotions to his wher rather than the words, and Shask snorted in annoyance, but submitted, stalking silently back toward the caves they inhabited.
Shandar turned to follow Amika, jogging lightly up the steps and gliding in behind her. He stayed near her as she moved toward the eggs, casting a somewhat wary look at the Weyrfolk. Unfamiliarity bred mistrust, and for them, it was mutual. He turned his attention to the remaining eggs, a meatroll he had swiped from a nearby bowl in his hand, with little left to do but wait.

The next egg to hatch was the Chocolate Chip Egg. It did so without much noise or excitement. The brown that broke free of the shell stood still for a moment looking around himself, blinking at the light his sensitive eyes were slowly getting used to. He seemed to analyze things for a long moment, his growling tummy the first thing to make itself known to him. He moved slowly to the edge of the basin, leaning his head over to judge the distance to the floor before slipping over the edge. The brown was a rich, even, chocolate brown. He shook his head and held his wings slightly open as he began walking among the people present, looking at each thoughtfully.
While the Chocolate Chip brown was making his decsion the Gum Drop egg hatched with just as little noise as its sibling. This egg also held a brown. This brown was a good sized brown. Evenly colored a rich brown much like tilled, fertile soil. He was slower in making his way to the edge of the basin, not hesitant, but contemplative. He finally slipped over the edge and landed with a slight thump on the stone floor below. He wasn't willing to take as long as his sibling and went straight to N'ryl.
Seeing his sibling make his choice the Chocolate Chip Brown finally made his choice, walking straight to Shandar. He looked up at the boy and chirped almost in greeting as he folded his wings against his back.
The next two eggs to hatched did so almost simultaneously. The Taffy egg spilled a tiny green from its shell. The green simply laid there breathing hard, her head tucked under her wing and seemed to be oblivious to the sand coating her damp side. She was a soft pastel green, but it was hard to tell at this point if she had any other colors on her hide.
The other egg to hatch was the Butterscotch Egg. Regally stepping from this broken egg is a lovely, dark golden beauty. She looked around herself slowly, spreading her wings to reveal that her wing membranes were a lighter, creamier gold. That same lighter gold splashed across her right eye and down the right side of her neck.
The butterscotch gold trilled softly to her green sister, walking over to her to nuzzle her gently, encouragingly. The Taffy Green lifted her head and trilled softly back to her golden sister before trying to tuck her head under her wing again. The Butterscotch would have none of it and nudged the dainty green again, urging her to her feet then over to the edge of the basin. The gold slipped over the edge and looked up the short distance to the green who peered over the edge skeptically.
Finally, with much encouragement the gold got the green to slip over the edge and even went so far as to cushion the green's landing, This act revealing the darker, grass green swirls on the green's underbelly.. Nuzzling the Taffy green again the Butterscotch gold coaxes her to move, to find the person they want.
The green made her choice in quick order, curling up against Emberlyn's foot, looking up at the girl with a weak chirp of hunger.
After seeing her sibling safely to their chosen person, the gold turned her attention to finding the person she wanted. She took her time at this task, looking over each potential person carefully before deciding. With a chirp of delight she walked straight to Rhea, looking up at the girl expectantly.

The remaining four eggs were rocking with all their might now, struggling to hatch now that their siblings were out in the world. The next egg to hatch was the Bubbly Pie egg, followed closely by the Jelly Bean egg.
The Bubbly Pie egg broke open, spilling a lovely blue onto the sands. The blue shook his head and stood slowly, looking around calmly. He moved to the edge of the sands then slipped over the edge of the basin to sit on the floor. The Bubbly Pie Blue is an average sized blue. His hide was a dark sapphire with a lighter, cerulean blue streak running from the top of his head down his back to the tip of his tail.
The Jelly Bean egg split apart and the little green let out a shrill shriek to let the world know that she had arrived and needed attention. She hurried to the edge of the basin as soon as she noticed and slipped over the edge, flapping her wings as she tumbled to the ground. She shrieked again as she landed, tumbling head over tail. She shook her head as she sat there dazed for a moment. She was a rich evergreen color with yellowish green streak along both of her flanks
The green shrieked again as she made her way to Arysa, looking up at her as she continued to chitter and trill demandingly.
The Bubbly Pie blue watched his sister, tilting his head to the side as she made her noisy demands of her chosen person. He snorted lightly and stood, calmly making his way over to Clinah. He trilled up at her softly before sitting by her foot.
The last two eggs hatched simultaneously. The Fudge egg hatching a Bronze and the Lollipop Egg hatching a Blue. The bronze looked at his blue sibling then around himself. The blue chirped desperately as he looked around, ignoring the bronze as he tried to find the person he wanted to be with. He scrambled over the edge of the basin and hurried across the room as fast as his little legs would carry him, running into Xian's leg. He looked up at the boy and dug his claws into the material of Xian's pants. Her chirped and trilled loudly as he clung to Xian's pant leg. The blue was a dark navy blue that almost looked black at night or in the shadows.
The bronze watched his blue sibling as he perched on the edge of the basin. He fluttered his wings as he held them open to help them dry faster. He was a light bronze, pale in color with underlying swirl of darker bronze along his neck and with his wings open the same darker bronze was revealed to swirl along his wing membranes. After a long moment of looking about the bronze slipped the short distance down to the floor and walked with purpose toward Larikev. He stood looking up at him intently, waiting to be noticed.

Larikev watched with awe as the remaining eggs hatched. As the first blue made its way around the circle of onlookers toward himself, he attempted to call the blue's attention by whistling softly to it. All this achieved was for the blue to nibble his boot then stalk off to the other side of the room. He stared after it, disappointment evident in him, but was glad to see it look up to Auria. Well, at least the both of them Impressed, he thought.
With each successive egg cracked his heart skipped another beat. He watched with fascination as all the brightly coloured little lizards sat in the sand, some making their decisions faster than others. He caught his breath when the gold emerged, but a thoiught in the back of his mind wouldn't let him go, the same as had happened when the dark bronze had sat on the sand. You'll never get one like that, Kev. Not you. Safely seeing her sister Impressed, he watched with some bitterness as the gold headed toward another girl he had never met.
Slowly, the rest of the eggs hatched and Impressed until there was only the two left. He held his breath as they lay rocking in the sand, knowing only too well that would be his last chance, even though that little niggling voice was back. You've not got one yet, and you'll never now.
He was jerked out of this when, simultaneously, the two eggs cracked, falling apart to reveal a bronze and a blue. For less than a second his awed gaze fell upon the bronze. He was so handsom! But then he looked to the screaching blue. He's my last chance, I'll never get the bronze, he thought sadly. His spirits finally fell as the blue scrambled out of the bowl to the feet on some other boy, the one he thought he had briefly met before. Disappointment welled up inside him, seeing his last chance gone, he laid his head on his knees, eyes closed. Go on, little bronze, go Impress someone worthy of you, he thought sadly, unconsciously projecting the thought out to the flitter.
As it was, he never saw the bronze as it stood finally and purposely walked to sit at his feet looking up at him. In fact it wasn't until the bronze made a second attempt at attracting his attention by trilling gently that he looked up. He started. It was looking at him! He was hungry. No, he realised, the lizards hungry, that thought wasn't his.
Gingerly, not wanting to scare it off, though somehow he knew that that wasn't likely to happen, he held out a chunk of meat roll. As if that was what he had been waiting patiently for all along (it was after all) the bronze stood up and quite regally walked up to his hand and took the meat. Placing the next piece of meat roll closer, and finally on his lap, he soon had the little bronze in his arms, quite sated. The bronze took one final look around at the remaining people in the weyr before curling up to sleep, claws gently hooked into Kev's tunic.
That's it, little Phoenix. Sleep now, he breathed, still not quite accepted that he had Impressed his own fire lizard, let alone a bronze!

As P'neil continued to feed Blue (and as she continued to internally grin at the simple name), Arysa listened to the hatchlings as they found those they wished to feed them. When she'd signed up for a firelizard, it certainly hadn't occurred to her how difficult it might be to entice a 'lizard to her when she couldn't even see where they were! And it was a little disappointing, as well, not to be able to see what color each of the new hatchlings were. She knew the color of P'neil's (Blue, of course) but not what shade of blue, or if he had any markings, or his size... Bah.
Then a sharp, demanding tirade sounded right by her feet. Arysa was startled, both by that and the sudden intense hunger, but she wasted no time before crouching and offering the 'lizard a scrap of meat. The meat vanished. Encouraged, she offered another.
The little green, meanwhile, was still squawking at Hers between bouts of stuffing her face. She needed to be fed faster. So, with a coaxing trill, she climbed up into Arysa's lap.

Rhea was entranced by the hatching. Sure, it wasn't as nerve-wracking and intense as the dragon hatching had been. And certainly she would never get a flitter who could be as amazing as Minath was a dragon. But perhaps she would get a cute little blue she could play with or something. Even if she didn't, just watching the miracle of birth of these precious animals was enough. She wanted to take them all home, but Minath had insisted before they'd even begun that taking home more than one would never be proper, or fair to the other people.
As she watched fire lizard after fire lizard hatch, she couldn't help but coo softly. They were so precious. But the gold that came out of the butterscotch egg, she was beautiful. And a girl after Rhea's own heart, for she was carefully making sure that her siblings impressed before she even looked for her person. She would make a wonderful clutcher, when she grew up. What the little girl didn't expect was for the gold to examine everyone, and then chirp at her.
She was so cute. And she looked hungrily, watching Rhea expectantly. Her eyes seemed to be telling Rhea to feed her. She was larger than the others, as was to be expected, seeing as she was a gold, and she daintily plucked the meat from the girl child's offering fingers. She was so regal, and her name seemed to slip between Rhea's lips unbidden. "Lilia," she breathed, stroking the gold's head gently. She was so cute, and she was Rhea's.
An instant later, she was squealing for her dragon, her best friend, who had to see the darling flitter who was now theirs. Minath! Minath! You have to see Lilia!
