Please note: This thread will be the one in which the Hatching takes place, but it won't actually begin until April 9th. We just wanted to post the descriptions early for the Contest to proceed.1. Caramel Egg - The Caramel Egg is a soft, buttery brown in color with swirls of dark brown and golden brown along its smooth surface. It is on the medium side of the spectrum and rests just in front the Taffy Egg. Feelings of cheerful amusement waft from this engaging egg. 2. Candy Corn Egg - The Candy Corn Egg is reminiscent of candy corn, darker brown at the bottom, lightening to a creamy tan at the top. It is on the smaller side and is tucked between the Licorice and Bubble Gum Eggs. A range of emotions emanate from this egg, much like the range of colour on its shell, from displeasure to satisfaction all at once. 3. Butterscotch Egg - The Butterscotch Egg is the largest egg in the clutch. It is a rich golden color, like butterscotch. It is nestled a little deeper in the sand and set away from the rest of the clutch. This egg is one of the most solid in its aura, sending out a steady wash of calm and self-assuredness. 4. Taffy Egg - The Taffy Egg is the smallest egg in the clutch, tucked behind the Caramel Egg as if hiding behind it. The Taffy Egg is a swirl of soft, pastel colors of blue, pink, green, and white. This egg is meek, reaching out with tentative tendrils of emotion. 5. Chocolate Chip Egg - The Chocolate Chip Egg is a dark brown color, one of the larger eggs in the clutch. It rests infront of the Licorice and Bubble Gum Eggs beside the Cotton Candy Egg. This egg wafts confidence, providing feelings of security for any who approach. 6. Bubble Gum Egg - The Bubble Gum Egg is a smaller egg. It is a colorful egg, swirled with many colors both bright and pale. It rests against the Candy Corn Egg. Feelings of excitement and curiousity pulsate from this little egg, overwhelming the more passive eggs adjacent to it. 7. Cotton Candy Egg - The Cotton Candy Egg is a medium sized egg with pinkish colored shell. It rests lightly against the Chocolate Chip Egg in a deep hollow in the sand. Despite its lack of impressive size, this egg has a superior feeling to it, almost pushing away from the other eggs around it. 8. Mint Egg - The Mint Egg is a smallish egg. It is a soft green color with brown splashes, like some one took a paint brush and splashed paint onto the egg. The Mint Egg rests off to the side of the clutch, as if shunned by the rest of the eggs. 9. Licorice Egg - The Licorice Egg is a dark, nearly black egg, a solid color covering the shell. It rests against the side of the Candy Corn Egg, almost protective of it. This egg is bold, challenging all who come near. 10. Bubbly Pie Egg - The Bubbly Pie Egg rests just in front of the Butterscotch egg. The shell of the Bubbly Pie Egg, looks much like its namesake. It is criss-crossed with light brown strips and squares of darker blue, much like the filling of a Bubbly Pie. This egg is extremely mellow compared to many of its Clutchmates, with a feeling of peace and a carefree attitude. 11. Jellybean Egg - This multi-coloured egg consists of a rainbow of colours, each contained in oval-shaped patterns around its shell. It is slightly smaller than average and positioned beside the Lollipop Egg. Its emotions are much like its shell, with a rainbow of feelings ranging from loneliness to joy. 12. Fudge Egg - The Fudge Egg has a texture that appears almost edible, with a creamy light brown draped over its shell. It is also on the larger side and sits slightly in front of the Butterscotch Egg, nearly pushed right out of the Clutch. It seems content to be where it is, removed from the centre of attention, and is simply waiting. Patiently waiting for something to happen. 13. Lollipop Egg - Swirls of colour surround this entire egg in concentric patterns, almost dizzying to the eye. This smaller-than-average egg is leaning against the Jellybean Egg, as if for support. Its emotions tend to mirror this impression, for it seems eager to cling to anyone who draw near. 14. Gum Drop Egg - Although initially similar in appearance to the Jellybean Egg, the Gum Drop Egg's splotches of colour are less defined, with a more mosaic design. This egg is medium-sized and positioned next to the Bubbly Pie Egg. Its emotions are cautious but interested, as if testing the air.

(I know the technical hatching doesn't begin till tomorrow, but wanted to get this thrown out there so people could get their characters in place.)
S'lem swatted at the tickling at his cheek, mumbling in his state of half awake and half asleep. It was early morning and he wasn't due to get up for a few more candle marks to go on sweep with Myra.
With a curse he jerked up right at the sharp stab of pain to his right ear. He put his hand to his ear and lowered it, frowning at the sight of a bit of blood smearing his fingers. He looked at his bed, afraid to see a tunnel snake curled up on his pillow. His frown deepened when he saw Majesty, his gold fire lizard looking up at him, squawking her agitation when she saw him looking at her.
"Shard it Majesty! What was that for?" he snapped as he rubbed at his stinging ear. Majesty trilled at him before hopping off the bed and walking to the large basin of sand near the side of his bed. He was lucky he was able to get his gold to lay her clutch in the sand and not under his bed or among his clothes in his hamper, as it was the flit kept dragging his shirts over the top of the sand.
He sighed and started to lay back down until he heard a soft humming. He sat back up and looked over the edge of the bed at the basin, frowning as he looked at the sand closely. He pulled his good shirt off of the sand and watched the eggs closely.
He smiled when he noticed one twitch, then another. Majesty perched on the edge of the basin and puffed out her chest as she hummed as loud as he little chest would allow her.
S'lem looked toward his sleepy blue. Griflith. I need you to wake up Griflith and inform the ones that wished to have a firelizard to come to our weyr, he asked his blue, repeating himself until the blue finally complied.
All of those that wished a little cousin must come to my rider's weyr, they are hatching now. Bring food for the little cousins, Griflith broadcasted sleepily before burying head under his wing to try and go back to sleep.
S'lem shook his head and turned his attention back to the eggs, watching them closely. Was that a crack he could see on the Taffy egg? He had definitely been surprised at the bright colors of the clutch and was curious about what color the fire lizards would be.

The water bubbled and frothed around his hands as he scrubbed at the plates, occasionally spilling over the edge of the basin and splashing on his shirt. This drudge work! why on Pern did the candidates have to do this. And why, he reminded himself, did he always manage to end up doing extra chores meant for the candidates that shirked their duties? Because he was too modest to say no, he reprimanded himself. It's your own sharding fault, Kev. You got yourself into this, now stick it through. Just think, all this and more you'd do for the chance to Impress! A dragon!
Whoa, hold on, he halted his rambling thoughts. None of the golds have even risen yet, let alone laid their eggs. He was still months away from the Hatching. In the mean time, he would just have to patiently wait, and do his chores...
Kev! Your name is on the flitter hatching list, isn't it?
He straightened immediately, hands ceases their scrubbing of the pot. ... Impress a fire lizard! he mentally completed his list of things-to-do-while-waiting. Were they hatching?!
Are they hatching? He called back by way of answering. He couldn't but help to let the excitement show in his voice.
So says Griflith, apparently, came his answer from the next cavern. He could have kissed that kitchen woman!
As if guessing his hurried intentions from the crashing of the pots by his side, a sharp reminder followed. Finish that pot first!
How had she even known I was on the pot? He half though as he bent to the task with more fervour that he could have mustered in a week, swearing at every burnt on piece of food.
He all but threw the pot onto the drying rack as he sped to the pantry, grabbing three meat rolls (would that satisfy a hungry flitter?) and sped out the door that lead to the bowl.
Realising he had no idea where S'lems weyr was, he skidded to a halt, turning the the kitchen woman. Eh...
S'lems weyr is four flights up, two along and one down. Turn left when you reach the bowl, she said, accurately guessing his predicament. She cast a disapproving, one-brow-raised look at the three meat rolls he was clutching. Those had better be for the flitter, or else you owe me an extra weeks scrubbing.
He grinned at her mischieviously, but went on to say They are. He turned heel then and began running back out towards the bowl, shouting a Thank You! over his shoulder to the woman, partly for directing him to S'lems weyr and partly for letting him keep the meat rolls.
----------------------------------
Arriving at the correct (he hoped) weyr ledge, he paused, out of breath from his uphill dash. This must be the right weyr, he told himself, straightening up, approached the cave entrance. The ledge was so far deserted apart from himself. S'lem? he called. Should he enter the others weyr, or should he wait for an invitation. All his manners, and even common sense, told him he should wait to be called in. To even have the chance of entering one of the riders weyrs was honor enough, without invitation was heresy!
(ooc: Wah, I have three days worth of muse plus extra for the hatching x] You can probably just ignore the part above the dashed line if you don't want to get bored ;]
Well, its the 9th where I am, just in case this looks a little early, as there are no other posts here yet ;] And I may not be able to post that much for the next few days, I have the notice up in the away board =[ )

"You really don't have to do this, I'm fine," Arysa said dryly to the dragonrider at her side. Some genius had left something in the corridor outside her room, and she'd banged into it pretty sharply. She was still walking with a limp. Unfortunately a brownrider had happened to walk past at just that moment, and was insisting on leading her the rest of the way down to the dining hall. "I'm fine, P'neil," she repeated.
"Mm." P'neil made a noncommittal sound, obviously not really listening to the harper's protests. He had his hand resting lightly on her arm, ready to steer her past any obstacles that might appear in her way. He'd been exploring the corridors when he'd seen her slam into a chest - although what a chest was doing in the corridor was beyond him - so he'd stopped out of concern. Discovering her blindness, of course he'd insisted on helping her down for breakfast.
P'neil Artoneth spoke lazily from where he was sunning himself, Griflith says those fire lizard eggs are hatching and that anyone who wanted one should bring food to his weyr. Does the harper want one? "Artoneth says that S'lem's fire lizard eggs are hatching and he asks if you want one," P'neil reported dutifully.
"I think I'm on the list," Arysa replied. She'd asked for one, and although she hadn't told anyone, she was hoping to train it to fetch things for her and carry messages so that she wouldn't have to do a whole lot of stumbling around. "I'm not sure I know where S'lem's weyr is though. Are you on the list?"
P'neil shrugged self-consciously. "Artoneth doesn't like fire lizards. He thinks they're annoying, so I didn't really request one."
"Well," Arysa answered him with a hint of mischief, "you should help me down to the kitchen to get some flitter-food, and since I don't know the way to S'lem's weyr, you would have to show me the way, wouldn't you? And I'm sure they wouldn't mind if you stayed to watch. Who knows, you might Impress one of the little ones."
P'neil didn't protest. It was an appealing idea. The pair went down to the kitchens, where P'neil gathered a bowl of scrap meats for her, with enough for anyone who happened to forget to bring food, then led her to S'lem's weyr. There was already a young man waiting there. Hearing him, Arysa threw the boy a wink. "S'LEEEM!" she sang out, sweeping into the weyr. P'neil adroitly guided her around a piece of furniture, an action which Arysa ignored, and grimaced at S'lem in apology, which Arysa of course didn't see. "Where are those darling little fire lizard eggs, then?"

Having Ranny in the girls' candidate barracks was bad enough for Auria, for it set up a barrier between herself and the others, but she just couldn't bear to let the nurse-care drudges take her nephew away. She had turned the trunk at the foot of her bed into a bed for him, and folded her meager belongings neatly beneath the bed on the floor.
When he woke that morning with an ear-ache, things got much worse. She'd missed morning kitchen drudgery by taking him to the infirmary, and had been severely scolded by the Headwoman when she showed up with a crying toddler hanging on her hip, secured by one arm and a sling. This was why Auria was now wandering the corridors, a whining child on her hip, holding a bag of raw rice that had been warmed on the hearth to his ear. In Rannell's hands, both of them, was the largest sweet bun Aury had ever seen.
The Headwoman may be hard on candidates, and had banished her from the kitchens, but she was apparently soft on two-turner boys with ear-aches.
Auria sang a soft song to the little one as she paced, and he interspersed silent sobs (a far cry better than the painful screams which had awakened her) with large messy bites of sticky sweet pastry.
"Pretty," he sniffled, pointing upward for the third time. Another brown, this time.
Auria watched the flitter buzz over head. It had been going on for some time, the high pitched hum in the air, and the occasional firelizard buzzing overhead. They all appeared to be going in the same direction, and it hadn't dawned on the candidate that she had been, apparently, following them.
"Pretty!" A bronze this time?
She rounded the corner and stopped short, for outside the door of a certain weyr, there appeared to be gathered a number of firelizards. They swooped in circles up near the corridor ceiling, two browns, a bronze and a pale, faded golden queen who looked like she might be quite old. Frowning at the sight, Auria was baffled, and the odd multi-toned humming that came from the flitters confused her further.
However, for the first time all morning, her nephew had stopped crying. His eyes were wide, tears drying on his cheeks, and he sucked on his sticky bun as he watched the aerial display. It took a moment for Aury to realize that, behind the massive cake, the toddler was humming along.
Curious, Auria crept closer to the door of the weyr, to find that it was ajar. She peered inside, glancing overhead at the flitters above, and saw that another, a bright little queen, was present on the other side. Aury knew nothing about these miniscule dragon-cousins, but if any beast could look proud, that would be what she would call the aura that emanated around her.
"Pretty!" Ranny said, his little voice carrying inside the weyr, though much lower-key than his normal enthusiasm. He sniffled and shifted a sticky hand to tug at his sore ear.
Taking advantage of the pleasant distraction, she leaned against the door frame. Though others already seemed to be gathering inside, Aury and Ranny hadn't been invited. However, this was the happiest Rannell had been all morning. The presence of firelizards always seemed to take him outside of himself, and for this child, who must be as haunted by the deaths of their family to Thread as she was, that was a good thing.
"I don't know what's happening, Ranny," she whispered, pressing the heat source to his ear again as she shifted him so he could see the golden pretty, "But maybe we can watch for just a moment, since you like the pretties so much."
"Briddy", he said through the bun that was stuffed halfway into his mouth.
[Just to clarify, the flitters by the ceiling all belong to my other characters <G>, I haven't stolen anyone's firelizards. LOL]

S'lem had been about to call out a greeting to the first voice he'd heard when he heard his name in sing song right before a young woman and a rider came in. He smiled and shrugged at the brown rider, indicating he didn't mind, at least he had gotten dressed before anyone showed up. "Come on in!" he called to the boy he could still see standing out on the ledge before turning his attention to Arysa.
"Here, let me get you a spot close to the basin," he said, reaching out to take her hand and help her to sit on the edge of his bed, the basin right in front of her. "Most of them are shaking and rocking right now and I think I see a crack on one of them, but its hard to tell with the pattern on the egg," he told her as he looked up at P'neil.
"You're welcome to stay and watch," he offered the brown rider with a smile. A soft humph came from the dragon couch where Griflith was waking up completely. For such a wonderful friendly blue he did not like mornings.
S'lem shook his head and turned his attention back to the eggs where Majesty had moved around the edge of the basin to sniff at Arysa, nuzzling against her hand before turning her attention back to her clutch, still humming loudly.
The eggs were still rocking, some more then others. The Mint egg was barely moving at all, but it did shiver with movement every now and then. S'lem looked at the list in his hand, taking a charcoal pencil and making a mark beside Arysa's name, unsure of who was out on the ledge.

Emberlyn had just finished taking Emmith to the feeding pens, the green large enough now to catch her own meals. She looked up toward the sky that was just brightening up for the morning. She was still feeling bad about the whole incident with her twin and had been avoiding her for the past few days, letting herself and her sister both think about they had done and to calm down.
Mine, Griflith says that it is time for the little cousin to hatch. You must stop worrying so. Your Emmith is fine and Ferth is fine, Emmith informed her rider, coming over to nudge against Emberlyn's leg, smearing blood on her pant leg from her muzzle.
Emberlyn smiled down at her green lovingly and nodded slowly as she reached out to rub the green's eye ridges. Alright love. I promise to stop thinking about it so much and I'll go to S'lem's for the hatching, she told her green.
She left Emmith to go clean in the lake as she made her way by the kitchens to grab a couple of meat rolls and a sweet bun for herself before heading up to S'lem's Weyr. She smiled at the young man on the ledge as she slipped into the weyr. "Good morning S'lem," she called out as she paused to nod politely to the waking blue before entering into the main room of the weyr.

Post by Cilnah on Apr 9, 2009 17:26:49 GMT -5
It was taking some getting used to, laying here in these bedfurs, all alone in her humanity. Yes, she had her Basyth there with her, and Makamae as always was curled up next to her, his head tucked under one wing. But that didn’t change the fact that there were no other people around. From the first time she could remember, there had always been someone. First her family, and then the other candidates. But now Cilnah was here in her own weyr, and it was a slightly uncomfortable sensation.
It was as she was lying here, contemplating this is the weak morning light, that her little Blue’s head came up, and tilted with an obviously curious air about him. She watched him for a moment, waiting for her usual morning greeting, but as the second ticked by and none came, she began to grow faintly worried. Just about to reach out to him and find out what was the matter, she was stopped by a sudden excitement in her mind.
Cilnah-mine! The little ones, they come to the world!
At first the girl was simply confused. She had just woken up a few moments before, after all. “What are you talking about, Bas?” Cilnah asked with a yawn.
In return, she received a shake of his big blue head and a chuckle.
The little cousins. Like the one sleeping next to your head. You remember, I told you to put your name on the list for their Hatching. Oh. Right. She vaguely remembered Basyth pestering her into putting her name on some list or another, but she hadn’t paid enough attention to even glance at what it was for. She knew he wouldn’t have her sign something bad, and by the number of other names it was obvious it was something of interest. But she’d not realized it was a flit Hatching! She had her Makamae, what take away the chance for someone else to have the companionship of one of the little ones? “I’m not going,” Cilnah muttered, rolling over and nuzzling back into the furs.
At which she received a firm butt in the hip. It hadn’t taken Basyth half a second to stretch his neck out and nudge her.Mine, it would be rude not to attend after placing your name on the list. His tone was admonishing, and of course she knew he was right. “Ugh! Fine!” she snapped, never having been much for admitting she was wrong. Flinging off the bed covers; she quickly slipped out of her bed and rummaged through her trunk, pulling on a pair of breeches and a top. She couldn’t really ride a dragon in a dress, now could she? As soon as she was dressed, the girl turned and carefully scooped the still sleeping Brown flit into her arms and moved to Basyth, climbing on his back with an easy, practiced motion. He may not be quite big enough for long flights yet, but that didn’t mean the Blue didn’t insist on flying her around the Weyr! This time was no different, and in a moment or two he was landing on the ledge that had already gained a small gathering, though not before grabbing same meat to feed any of the little ones who's bonded might not have brought enough.
Cilnah slipped off, and took a few hesitant steps into the weyr as Basyth moved off to give others room to land. The humming coming from the flits hovering about finally woke Makamae, and after a dreary moment, his voice too entered the fray, though very soft, barely there.
As for the girl, she dipped her head to the man who seemed to be the owner of the weyr and the little Gold who stood guard over her clutch. “Please pardon my intrusion,” she greeted, and moved to stand off over to the side. “My name is Cilnah, if you were not aware,” she added as she moved past him. It was this way for a few moments before a call came from her bonded Blue that made her freeze in her tracks.Cilnah-mine! Cilnah-mine, big brother Blue Gryth is coming!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ What little Basyth didn’t realize, however, was had he not said anything, ‘big brother’ Gryth and his rider would have moved on past the weyr without a second thought. For they were only out on a morning flight, to give the Blue a chance to stretch his wings. It was mere chance that they had wandered so close to the Hatching place. But at his call, N’ryl stiffened upon his bonded’s back.Mine? What is it?The dragon’s voice was curious, but not overly concerned. “I… I thought I heard a voice, is all,” the man answered with a small shake of his head. That was impossible. You could only hear another’s dragon if they wanted it, and the words he’d imagined certainly weren’t for him. They were of warning to his estranged sister. “It’s nothing. I just thought I heard someone calling out to Cilnah. Silly, eh?”
But it apparently didn’t seem silly to Gryth, who immediately shifted to flap over to the one place that the girl could possibly be. A quick scan of the area produced the half grown Blue that Cilnah had Impressed, and if the dragon could have smirked, he would. “What are you doing, Gryth?!” N’ryl demanded with a soft note of panic as they landed on the ledge that already held a brown on it, and a sleepy Blue besides. I want to watch the Hatching. They both knew that was a lie. Gryth had little interested in his smaller kin. But once his mind was made up, there was no changing it. So N’ryl had no choice. He shuffled just within sight of the clutch, and kept his head down, hoping to be as inconspicuous as possible.

Minath gazed patiently at hers. Well, as patiently as the little green could be. Rheamine...the little cousins are hatching. Do you want one? You are supposed to be going to wait for them to come out of their eggs.
Rhea blinked sleepily. Mina had to wake her up for that, didn't she? Of course, the silly flits had to be hatching at this early hour of the morn. Not that she didn't love flitters. They were absolutely darling. But Mina didn't take as much of an interest in the "little cousins," and Rhea certainly didn't want Mina to feel unloved. Minath was her best friend, her other half. Her soul sister.
Which was the sole reason why she managed to drag her buttocks out of bed. Minath woke her up. And she forced herself to wander through the corridors to grab some food for the flitters before attempting to find the room belonging to the owner of the gold flitter who had recently laid the eggs she'd signed up to adopt.
Xian sighed, hearing the alert sound for the candidates that if they'd signed up to try and get a firelizard, they should leave now. Xiarl wanted one. And of course, at this early an hour, he was never going to get up to get on. It would be Xian's duty to catch the little thing and bring it back for Xiarl to feed.
Still, he should probably grab some food to lure it to him, before he caught it. Xiarl wanted to impress the thing, though, so there was no way Xian was going to actually feed the little beastie unless he seriously wanted to suffer. Xiarl was like that sometimes. Especially about something that apparently made him a higher class of person. Not that Xian really understood why that was. Whatever.
He grabbed a few bits of meat before slipping quietly into the room, which was swiftly becoming crowded. It was, after all, meant to house, at most two people and their dragons. For brief periods of time. It wasn't meant to hold all these people, but that was alright. He was less likely to be noticed, where someone might notice he was going to grab a flitter and leave without actually trying to impress it.
{ooc;;i realize it sucks. i'm sorry. and xian is going to impress if he gets a flitter. just. he would probably only have gone if xiarl was going too or to get one for his brother. IC playing is win}

S'lem moved aside to allow room for the people coming into his weyr, silently sighing in relief that he had kept his room tidy lately and had taken laundry down to be done the day before. He noticed the girl near the door holding a young boy, but didn't mind them staying to watch since the little boy seemed so interested in the flits now in his weyr to welcome the hatchlings.
S'lem was startled out of his musings when he heard a loud crack coming from the basin. He held his breath as he saw the Licorice egg crack open, nearly shattering completely as the occupant made its entrance into the world.
The bronze left standing in the place of the egg blinked slowly as he looked around at all the people looking down at him. He snorted and shook his wings, flinging egg goo all over the place as he stepped onto the lip of the basin.
The bronze was large with a dark, nearly black hide it was so deep a bronze. The color was even over his hide, no other color mixed in. He looked around himself, looking at each person as if trying to make a choice, but no one seemed to meet whatever standards he had in his mind.
At the movement of the Licorice egg, the Candy Corn egg began rocking in earnest. The Licorice egg had been resting almost protectively against the Candy Corn egg.
The Candy Corn egg rocked, bumping against the Bubble Gum egg hard enough to knock the Bubble Gum egg over before falling onto its side as well.
After another long moment cracks finally began to appear over the interesting colored shell of the egg, spider webbing along the surface. With an effort the shell finally broke, a dark green back leg poking through the upper side of the shell. The leg wave through the hole for a short moment before disappearing back into the egg to be replaced by fore claws pulling at the hole to make it larger. With a loud screeching a dark green head broke through the larger hole, then shoulders as the egg crumbled around the green.
She shook her head and screeched again as she stumbled away from the shell, her dark, emerald green hide picking up sand as she pushed away from the remains of her prison. She kicked sand on it before turning to look up at the people in the room. She gave them a quick look over, deciding that none of them were for her, then scrambled over the edge of the basin, ignoring the Licorice Bronze's trilled question.
The little green hit the floor with a thump and darted under the bed and she could be heard walking across the floor, her hardening claws clicking lightly on the stone. She appeared on the other side of the bed and headed straight for the cracked open door where she stopped to look up at Auria, or more specifically at Rannell in the girl's arms. She trilled up at the little boy, looking at him expectantly.
