Gwynevith’s eyes whirled slightly at Artoneth’s compliments, although not so much as to appear too easily pleased. She did have to keep up appearances, after all! But flirting was a practice engaged in surprisingly rarely for the usually reserved gold, and receiving such attention was certainly a nice change from the usual weyr affairs she concerned herself with, as her rider did. Surely she deserved such attention once in a while.
Indeed. I only hope that many will rise to the opportunity, Gwynevith replied, with just enough of a touch of sweetness to her tone to indicate the flirting nature of her words. He really was a fine brown, after all, and she took a secret, smug satisfaction in the way he complimented her.
Alana’s stormy expression lightened somewhat as she considered Kitari’s offer, and responded with a curt nod. “Thank you, that would be perfect,” She replied, and fell silent again as Kitari pointed out a weyr for P’neil to stay in. She was bothered by her friend’s seeming lack of concern (or, as Alana saw it, sufficient concern given the sitation), and certainly had been more snappish and stressed than usual as she suddenly found all the duties of running the weyr falling squarely on her shoulders. Couldn’t Kitari see that Araelen was in crisis? Often forced to run her family’s large household as often as her father did, Alana had seen several emergencies, although, of course, none on anywhere near such a scale as this. Such a time, she had learned, required swift action and a strong leader for others to look to. People wanted to see that something was being done, that steps were being taken to repair the situation and prevent such a crisis from occurring again. Also dangerous were the panic, chaos, and discord that could arise should the weyr’s inhabitants realize how leaderless they were. Someone had to be there, constant and strong, to refuse to succumb to the impossibility of the situation and find solutions. And Alana greatly wished Kitari would help her with that goal. It didn’t matter who was in command; sharing it meant less work and less stress for both of them. But they needed to show the weyr they were there to lead and to act, or so Alana felt.
Alana nodded at the weyr Kitari pointed out, as it was likely one of the most complete available for the new rider, and she straightened her papers as she began to turn back toward the weyr. “Well then, it looks like things are taken care of here…? It was good to meet you, P’neil,” She said, flashing the brownrider a grin. “And I’ll see you soon, then, Kitari?”
However, a frown passed over her face, and she glanced back up at her dragon as the gold began to speak to her.
But mine, we can’t be leaving already! I was talking to Artoneth, She interjected, tone indicating how loath she was to leave the conversation.
You…what? Oh. Well… Alana was unused to such a violent outburst of emotion from her dragon, and her eyes flicked between the gold and Artoneth. I have business to take care of, Gwynevith! I promise you can talk to him later. I’ll arrange to meet with his rider, how is that? The dragon reluctantly agreed, and Alana turned back to P’neil.
“Oh, P’neil! What do you say we meet in the Lower Caverns in a few days? Have a cup of klah; I’ll show you around and help you get settled?”
