We are a typical site in that we insist upon the basics of roleplay, or rp, etiquette. There are to be no godmoding, powerplaying, rude behaviour, slander, politically distasteful comments, or inappropriate sexual references.
1. Our forum is a PG-13 (yes, I suppose we do allow kissing), friendly, welcoming, equality-based site. Post flight ‘happenings’ are not posted.
2. Godmoding and powerplaying can basically be defined as controlling other people’s characters in your own post, and this is not only rude behaviour but also unfair conduct. An example of this would be, “Jimmy punched Derek square in the eye, causing a giant bruise to appear.” The more appropriate post would be, “Jimmy swung angrily at Derek’s eye with his clenched fist.” This allows the other character, in this case, Derek, to respond as to whether or not his character was fast enough to duck the punch, or whether he was indeed struck.
3. We insist that rpers do not insult each other in posts, and that instead, the exalt/smite options be used. Be friendly! If you don’t much like another’s post, gently smite them once, and move on! Do not run them down. Likewise, if you really enjoy someone’s post, take the liberty of exalting them! It will be exciting to watch one’s karma rise and fall, hopefully encouraging enthusiasm to improve one’s abilities! Consider it a bit of a game.
4. Post length. This may become an issue for some, but hopefully it will become easier with time. An rp thread is basically like a mini novel, with different authors contributing their own characters and ideas to the plot. Thus, a one-liner post is inadequate. Although we are not asking that you write 5 paragraphs in every post, take your posts as an opportunity to express/reveal your character’s thoughts. You may choose to include a lot of dialogue, or merely the emotions and actions of your character. Either way, at least one, good-sized paragraph is required in most situations, more in others.
5. In terms of amount of posts, we don’t set strict minimums, but do encourage them. If there is a green/gold flight occurring, all bronze, brown, and blue riders are asked to post at least once, in case you are not able to attend the thread at a later time. You can state your intentions in OOC if you do not wish for your dragon to win. In a Hatching, each candidate must post at least once. In terms of other threads, we encourage new candidates/members to post at least 5 times a month to get your character started and interacting with others. Full-fledged dragonriders should be posting at least 10 times a month. If you are unsure where/how to post, check for non-private threads in all of the Weyr/Hold/Hall sections. Don’t be afraid, join in! Or, even start your own thread! If you find a thread with few or no replies, be nice as you’d hope others would be for you, and join!
6. Which brings us to the topic of OOC! Try to keep these comments to a minimum in your posts, unless in the Out of Character section of the site. There’s no need to have a conversation in the middle of a thread, so if you need to inform the members that you will be away for some days, do it shortly and discreetly.
7. Private Threads. Some role players may, over private messaging, create sub-plots for their characters together. If this is the case, and the rpers do not want to be disturbed by others jumping into their thread, they can simply post ‘Private’ in the title. This site does not allow the kind of discretion that will keep others from reading the thread, so ‘lurkers’ are allowed to read, just not allowed to post. As well, as much as you may enjoy only interacting with one character if you have an exciting plot with them, try to keep Private Threads to a minimum. We want everyone on the site to have fun!
8. Let’s be fair! The forum has a relaxed, ‘Turn-Based’ attitude. No one enjoys coming back to a thread they were in after a few days to find that 2 pages of action has occurred without them. If you are involved in a thread with more than one other person, have consideration for all members of that thread. Assume some form of equal pattern.
Ex. Character 1 Posts. Character 2 Posts. Character 3 Posts. Character 1 posts. Etc…
Although it may be frustrating waiting for others, 2 or 3 days is not an unreasonable time between posts. The ‘Turn-Based’ rule is relaxed, in that, if your character is directly addressed by another before it is your turn to post, you may do so and change the pattern slightly.
Ex. C1 Posts. C2 Posts. C3 Posts. C1 Posts. C3 Posts. C2 Posts.
You must only be sure that the altered pattern does not cut out the third/fourth member of the thread.
Exceptions: If a thread has a large base (ex. Gather), and your character is interacting with only one other character, the two of you may choose to move to another thread alone, or you may post without waiting for others. This will only work, though, if you still keep your posts to a minimum, allowing others to join/react to the interaction. In other words, don’t post with the other person for an entire page while others aren’t present. That’s a little unreasonable.
Hatchings and Flights are different in that the character being focussed on (gold rider/green rider) may post more frequently.
9. All posts must be made in the third person.
10. We do reserve the right to deal swiftly and decisively with members disobeying any of the above rules! We, as moderators, may delete or modify inappropriate posts, and even delete members. Be aware of this! You will be warned first before deletion.
11. Any questions? Private message M'kel, Shikai, or D'gellin!
