I'd be fine with a blurring of timelines. We could have a betweening lesson thread, while other threads have the Weyrlings already betweening, if that's most convenient for people.
As for the Search discussion...I was thinking characters who are likely to spark conflict would be best. The two chars you mentioned, Gayze, are about the nicest there are in each of those Weyrs.
Would Phelicia and Q'tris work? Although I'm under the impression that Nicola is the meaner of the two (lol), there don't seem to be many options for an Ikros Searchrider.
