Rukbat was just beginning to dip below the horizon when B'rec reached the beach. He paused, gazing out over the expanse of the ocean. The waters had been turned golden by the slant of Rukbat's rays, and the light shimmered as waves moved calmly just beneath the surface. Crimson and scarlet colours were splashed across the sky. A light breeze frothed the waters against the shore and fluttered the leaves newly sprouted from the jungle's trees. A tantalizing scent filled the air, as flowers spread their petals wide to the last of the light.
In other words, it was a pleasant summer evening - cooler than the heat of the day yet balmy enough to travel comfortably in a short-sleeved tunic and cut-off pants. The sand was warm underfoot, and B'rec dug his toes into its gritty embrace. It wasn't often that he found the time to just stop and look around, to enjoy the beauty of nature and find peace in solitude. He had felt the need for that kind of experience more often now, after the poisoning scare, for it had awakened in him a new appreciation of his own mortality. Thus, he had accepted A'clayr's invitation to meet quite readily, in a time and place they might be alone. He was eager to visit with his friend, and even more eager to escape the Weyr for a time.
Dagonth had stayed behind this evening, choosing to enjoy the last of Rukbat's warmth from the stone ledge of his weyr. Although B'rec was always loathe to leave his loyal blue, the dragon had reminded him that he wouldn't be alone. He was meeting a friend, after all, and there was always Griffin, his handsome brown 'lizard. The flitt was currently perched on a rock just off the shoreline, peering eagerly into the water after fingerlings and other tasty fish.
As for A'clayr, it seemed that his friend hadn't arrived yet. B'rec scanned the beach one more time to make sure he wasn't just missing him, then he picked out a spot and moved towards it. A ridge of sand topped by a palm tree seemed ideal, and the dragonrider slowly lowered himself down, leaning his back against the tree. It wasn't long before he found his eyes drifting shut. His breathing slowed, and he settled in, listening to the sound of the ocean as he waited.
