S'tar froze as K'yan's hand rested on his shoulder. His heart rate picked up so suddenly he was sure the other rider could hear it, could feel the racing beneath his touch. Touch. Touch like that was never a good thing aboardship. The cap'n, he would always begin with touch. He'd make it seem comforting, soothing, but it would fill the young lad with dread. He always knew what that touch would lead to....
But no, how could that be? K'yan had Impressed bronze. Surely not....
Hatsheth nudged them. Mine, is it not true that sometimes a friendly touch is simply a friendly touch? I truly do not understand why you are so uncomfortable around other humans.
S'tar was trying to swallow the old reflexes, trying to absorb his dragon's thoughts, trying to accept that she was right, when K'yan's words helped tremendously.
The young man seemed to honestly wish to understand. He was pleased that they had rescued Spark. He wasn't being judgmental at all.
S'tar forced himself to relax and took a deep, shaky breath. "I thought I'd do some mapping of outlying areas. Hatsheth's flying well, and a very strong young green, and we were being careful, honestly...." He gathered the courage to meet K'yan's eyes, hoping that the understanding would not turn to disappointment that the green weyrling had taken his dragon out of the safety of the Weyr. "We came around a bend in the river, and saw the men on runners in the distance. The pack runners behind them were loaded down ... It looked like all sorts of goods were tied to those scruffy beasts, and their owners certainly didn't look the sort to own an abundance of luxuries. As they rushed off, the egg fell from the pack of one of the trailing beasts...."
He lowered his gaze to the slumbering creature in his hand. He was so tiny, so frail. His skin was actually transparent in spots, and even through closed lids, S'tar could see the jewel facets of his eyes. "Oh, I hope you're right. I want more than anything to see him thrive."
Then, suddenly aware of the hand that still rested on his shoulder, S'tar went silent and still.
