Auria, from the first crack of an egg, forgot that she was only watching the flitter hatching for the sake of her nephew. She had never seen any kind of hatching before, of course, and when the dark little bronze appeared, she grinned and pointed at him.
"Look, Ranny, a baby firelizard, can you say firelizard? Isn't he cute?"
Rannell, his mouth stuffed with sweet bun, said, "Cyee-oot! Cyee-oot pretty!"
The second to hatch was a rich green, and Aury gasped when she fell, and stretched her neck to see where she'd gone.
"Geen!" the toddler said, and hiccupped.
"Very good, Ranny, ver--"
The movement on the floor stopped her words, as she realized that the little one was making a determined beeline toward her.
It couldn't be. The fact that she had a two-turner tied to her already had the other candidates whispering. She was sure the rest of the people in the weyr were supposed to be here -- she had just stopped by to watch because Rannell wasn't feeling well.
"Shoo," she whispered, waving her hand discretely at the approaching flitter, in the hopes of encouraging her to go find her rightful friend.
"No shoo," Ranny said, picking up his leg and showing his auntie the foot attached to it. "Shoo," he explained and pointed at the firelizard, who had stopped at Auria's feet. "Geen pretty. Mine's!"
At that point he began to squirm, to kick, to struggle against her hip so hard that she was afraid his "Shoo" might indeed leave bruises.
The little one on the floor screeched indignantly and rose as tall as she could reach, flapping wet, sticky wings that would not yet lift her into the air.
"Mine's geen pretty!" the child said, more loudly, and began to weep. "Hungy geen pretty, hungy hungy hungy! Tummy hurt, hungy. Want 'tickybun!"
It was only then that Aury realized, and a strange disappointment mingled with the fear of the repercussions of her realization, that when Ranny had said "Mine's geen pretty", this time....
He was feeling the flitter's hunger. And her tummy hurt. Oh, my.
As if in response, the little one kreeled loudly and tried to climb Auria's legs. Sharp little claws dug into skin, and, as quickly as she could, the girl undid the hip-sling and lowered her nephew to the floor.
He sat with a plop and a grin, and the little green left the girl and turned to the child upon whom she had projected her hunger. She climbed possessively into his lap. Ranny shared his stickybuns with no human, but he gladly held it out to his very own geen pretty, who took an enormous bite.
Ranny then took a bite of his own, and turned the bun back to the flitter. They sat for a moment, in happy silence, sharing unhealthy delights, before the fact that this probably wasn't the best firelizard fare dawned on Auria.
She then looked around at the others in the room. "Does anyone have a bit of meat we can, um, borrow?"
The look on her face was one of shock and confusion. Now what was she going to do? She'd never win the trust of her fellow candidates when they saw her return to the barracks with Ranny and his own green firelizard!
But there was nothing for it. Seeing the child sitting there, happier than he'd been since the death of their family, in obvious rapport with the lovely little thing, Aury couldn't fault him for what was meant to be.
"What's her name, Ranny?" she whispered as she knelt beside him, and stroked his mop-shock of hair. "What will you call her?"
Expecting him to say "Geen pretty", or "Mine's" the girl was surprised when her nephew smiled up at her, and answered, "She name Fi'Wizzerd!"

He almost jumped out of his skin as the brown dragon alighted onto the ledge behind him no sooner had he called out to S'lem. He stood watching, somewhat dumbly and out of character for him, as the browns rider led a young woman through the door and into the weyr without any more than announcing her presence in a sing-song voice.
He almost followed them in, hearing S'lems voice calling him in, when another arrived, striding inside with just as much confidence as the pair before. Why on Pern was he just standing there, he must look like a real dolt. Without a second thought he also followed into the weyr, pausing to look up at he sleepy blue dragon as he passed. A real dragon, up close! This was surely the closest he had ever been to one of the mighty beasts. Indeed they put the dolphins to shame.
Why did he think that? Of course they were, but how could he so easily dismiss his lifelong friends just like that?
Hearing others also arrive at the ledge behind him, he hurried past Griflith and through in to the room where everyone else was congregating, shuffling over to the other side of the basin to allow room for everyone else even as they arrived. Only then did he turn to the eggs.
They were so colourful! He had never seen a clutch before, and it must have shown on his face in the incredulous look he now wore. Looking them over in awe, his eyes came to rest on the Mint egg, sitting closest to him on the edge of the clutch. It looked so lonely and shunned...
He was brought forcefully out of his thoughts as the other eggs began to crack, a little bronze bursting from its shell, standing on the lip of the basin, soon followed by an emerald green. He watched the green with first apprehension as it fell from the basin, then amusement as it scrabbled under the bed, making a beeline for a girl standing by the door. He started as he recognised her as Auria, and of course the ever present Ranny on her hip. He was even more incredulous as she lowered Ranny down to the little green scrabbling at her legs, who then proceeded to feed it with his bun. A toddler Impressing a lizard! He'd never heard of that one before. Poor Auria. At least Ranny would now be happy with his own lizard, and not bothering poor Sprite, he thought, thinking back to the day he first met the pair, then grimaced, hand absently rubbing his nose.

S'lem heard the girl at the door as for some meat and he carefully moved through the room to hand her a few meatrolls that he had stashed in his weyr, they were old, but he doubted the fire lizards would mind in their hunger after hatching.
~~~~
After being knocked over the Bubble Gum egg began to rock more earnestly, rocking from side to side as the occupant struggled against their shell prison.
Finally, success! The egg cracks and spills its prisoner onto the sands, coating the blue in sand. The blue stands and shakes himself, kreeling in distress over the sand on his damp hide, it itched! Now he was hungry and itchy! He sat there looking pitiful for a moment before a shiver of moment caught his attention. He stood and crawled slowly toward the tip of the bronze's tail.
The Licorice bronze was still sitting on the lip of the basin, looking around patiently, almost as if the person he wanted hadn't arrived yet and he was willing to wait no matter how long it took despite a hungry tummy.
The Bubble Gum blue crept closer to the tip of the bronze's twitching tail and stretched his neck out to sniff at the moving tail. The blue opened his muzzle to bite down on the enticing object that might be food. But, before he could bite down the bronze shifted, moving his tail out of range and the blue stumbled forward, smacking his nose against the side of the basin.
With a cry more out of surprise then pain the blue scrambled over the edge of the basin and landed with a loud thump on the floor. Thankfully the basin wasn't a very tall one, so the fall wasn't far enough to do much damage. The Licorice bronze jumped at the sound of the blue and looked down at his smaller clutchmate and scolded him with a loud chitter.
The blue laid there dazed for a long moment, shaking his head as he sat up on his back legs, his wings hanging open as he looked around himself, noticing the people looking at him for the first time. He tilted his head and chirped up at them, but no one caught his eye right away. He stood and moved around each person's feet, sniffing and nosing at the shoes, evening going so far as to bite at the toe of Larikev's shoe.
With a sound of disgust the blue moved past the boy, heading toward the door now where he smelled something sweet. He saw the young boy sitting on the floor with his green sibling in his lap, but he wasn't interested in the boy. He went right past him to the girl standing watch over the boy. He sat on his haunches and looked up at Auria expectantly, chirping at her to let her know just how hungry he was.
Back on the sands the Mint egg gave another shiver of movement and the other eggs in the clutch stilled there own movements as the small egg moved, almost as if the occupants of the eggs were waiting to see what that little egg would do, but no, the Mint egg's motions stilled after a moment and the others went back to their own rocking.
The rider whose weyr they were in, to whom the little queen must look, brought Auria a couple of slightly dry meatrolls. "Thank you!" she said softly, allowing her cocoa-brown eyes to meet his in gratitude. As he returned to the more important business at hand, overseeing the eggs, she bent back to Rannell.
"Here, Ranny, Fi'Wizzerd would probably prefer meat to stickybuns."
"Meats," he said, nodding, and accepted the little piece his auntie broke off and handed him.
'Wizzerd took the bite of meat, rolled it about on her tongue for a moment, and spit it out onto the floor. She then grabbed another large mouthful of bun, her eyes whirling a pleased and satisfied teal.
Auria picked up the bite, and handed it back to the toddler. "Try again, flitters are meat-eaters. She's just a baby, she--"
But before the girl could finish, the meatroll bite had been spewed once again. 'Wizzerd turned with a hiss to scold her for her impudence.
Growing more concerned, she broke off another bite from the center of the roll, where it might be more moist, and tried again.
Before Rannell could get that piece close to her, the little green had stuffed her mouth with sweetroll, and was eying the big human intruder warily.
Thus, Aury was quite occupied, and didn't notice the approach of the newcomer. A tug on the knee of her breeches startled her.
As she heard the chirp, her eyes fell on brilliant blue, and the little one raised his wings to reveal soft sky blue membranes beneath. Her breath caught in her throat. He was so beautiful, and so...
Her tummy growled loudly, and she blushed as she scooped him into her arms.
He gladly accepted the bit of meatroll she'd been about to offer 'Wizzerd.
"Boo! Boo pretty! Want 'tickybun?"
But the blue pretty was very busy devouring the slightly stale meatroll, and the little green complained with a loud rattling chirp that HERS was even thinking about paying attention to her silly brother!
Ranny fed another bite of bun to his little friend, whose appetite was slowing down. Her full belly caused her to snuggle in his lap, half dozing between bites.
He picked up a bit of rejected meat from the floor and held it out to her. In her sleepy state, she ate it, yawning as soon as she'd swallowed.
Aury, on the other hand, barely noticed. The little sapphire gem in her arms was hungry, happily swallowing bites of meatroll whole, accepting a bit of sweet bun in between, occasionally actually stopping long enough to chew for a moment. His eyes whirled a blissful azure as he gazed into her face, and then sparked with rainbows as, distracted, he'd look all around the room, taking everything in. Although his emotions, she could already feel, belonged to her, his mind was ever exploring. He'd take a bite, look at one person, swallow another, stretch his neck to try and see the basin of eggs. He would lick his chops and poke his nose down toward his nearly-slumbering sister with a chirp just to see what she would do.
Auria couldn't help giggling at his non-stop curiosity. He was like a little explorer, eager to see what was under every bush, inside every cave, racing across every plain.
"I think I'll call you Safari," she said with a soft chuckle, "Because I have a feeling life with you is going to be an adventure!"
((Sorry it's short; company's here!))
Watch duty was just ending for the night, and Amika was exhausted. She yawned expressively and glanced over at Shandar, whom she'd been on duty with, before turning with Amisk and beginning to plod back into the Weyr. Few of the 'folk were stirring at this point, but there did seem to be a fair bit of commotion, with people rushing into one dragonrider's weyr.
Raising a quizzical brow, Amika moved to stop a drudge carrying a bowl of meet. "What's going on?" she asked, trying not to yawn again mid-question.
"Flitter Hatching!" the drudge gasped, trying to yank free and keep running. It was obvious that the spindly girl was excited to watch and refused to be delayed any longer.
"Shandar!" Amika cried. "The fire lizards are Hatching." She knew that the other Wherhandler had signed up for a chance at Impressing, just like she had, and glanced over to make sure he had heard. Then, the girl began to jog towards the weyr, following after the racing drudge. "Amisk, go to your cavern!" she yelled over her shoulder. The brown gave a creel of discontent but obeyed, rumbling off towards the entrance to the Wher Caverns.
Pounding up the stone steps, Amika skidded to a halt in the weyr, relieved to see that there were still some eggs unHatched and she wasn't too late!
Rhea had to giggle when the green made a beeline for the little boy. They were both so cute! Not that the boy's...sister maybe, agreed? She couldn't be his mother. Well, maybe she could, but she didn't act like Rhea felt a mother should around her child. Had he been Rhea's son, she would have doted on him to no end, and this girl seemed mildly embarrassed by his antics. Which were quite adorable.
The bronze was certainly confused. Silly little flitter. It wasn't going to anyone, completely ignoring the massive numbers of potential people with delicious raw meat for it to eat for its very first breakfast. Breakfast sounded rather nice right then.
A little blue flitter went to join his green sibling, going to the girl with the small child, and Rhea couldn't help but wonder if they were trying to make their own little family. It was cute!
Xian watched the green and the blue impress, but his mind wasn't really on them. It was on their bronze brother, sitting patiently on the rim of their makeshift hatching sand. Xiarl would love to have a bronze, and it might get him off of Xian's case for not waking him up. Because he would be angry for not waking him up, certainly.
The teen whistled softly at the bronze, trying to get its attention. Not that it would work. He wasn't quite sure how they chose people, but calling to it seemed as good an idea as any. In any case, it might just be in some kind of stupor as to choosing a person and that might wake it up to go pick a person.
F’rallen yawned broadly as he made his way through the near-empty halls of the weyr. It was barely morning, the sun just peeking over the horizon outside, and the air had yet to warm up. He often rose early, loving the particular charm of the early hours outside. And today there was even more reason to be excited – he and Brinne had plans to meet at the beach. Really, what could be better than admiring the morning sun on the ocean as the day began in the company of his friend? He walked at a brisk pace, for, by his estimates, he was running a little late. Never one to sleep late, he had been up on time, but Valkyrie had other plans.
Getting dressed tends to be difficult when an obstinate firelizard is trying to fly away with your clothes, after all. The green firelizard in question was now perched haughtily on his shoulder, regarding their surroundings with the same air of superiority she always employed. She was a little more controllable now that F’rallen had Dacrith to help, as the bronze was more able than he to put the little green in her place.
Just as F’rallen thought fondly of his bronze, asleep – or, no, awake now – back in his weyr, the dragon’s voice touched at his mind. Mine? Griflith’s says the firelizard eggs are hatching. F’rallen grinned. Really? It’s a fine morning for a hatching. I’m sure those lucky enough to be signed up will have a good time. You aren’t going to get one, F’rallenmine? Did you want me to? I’m sorry, I didn’t try for one! I have you and Valkyrie, after all. Oh, it’s not that, one little cousin is plenty. But I remember you saying something about them… The bronze mused, although, plagued as he was with the faulty memory all dragons had, he couldn’t recall why F’rallen had brought the topic up before.
“Oh!” F’rallen exclaimed aloud, recognition dawning on his face. It was true, he hadn’t signed up for a spot at the hatching, but Brinne had! And she was probably at or on her way to the beach by then! F’rallen thanked his dragon, and headed at once for S’lem’s weyr. He slipped in as quietly as he could manage, and muttered several apologies and ‘excuse me’s as he weaved through the crowd to the front, and his eyes scanned the pile for one that didn’t seem to be moving yet. Having missed the Mint Egg’s brief period of motion, it appeared to him to be still, and, resting as it was at the edge of the clutch, well within his reach. F’rallen’s hand darted out and snatched the egg, and he wriggled back out through the crowd before anyone could object. He didn’t have time to explain; the egg would be hatching any time!
F’rallen grabbed two meatrolls from a bowl a drudge held on his way out, and then quickly rushed the rest of the way out of the weyr. He began jogging toward the beach, looking at the long path before him in dismay, but he hadn’t gotten far before he heard the rush of beating wings just overhead. He looked up to see Dacrith, and the dragon landed a short distance in front of him.
I can take you to the beach, mine. Dacrith said, and F’rallen’s face brightened. He hugged his dragon’s leg before springing into place between the neck ridges, and they took to the air again, gliding neatly to the beach. Dacrith landed, and F’rallen’s head turned as his eyes searched for Brinne. The egg was going to hatch! Where was she?
Kinga sauntered in, having quickly heard about the flitt clutch through the grapevine. She had expressed interest in getting an egg when the clutch was laid, and she hoped her wish would be granted.
She nodded a quick greeting at the rider who seemed to be the Gold's owner, then looked over the eggs. Some were already hatched, but there were plenty of chances left for her to Impress.
S'lem could only stare after F'rallen's back as he took off with the egg, his eyes wide. He shook his head and sighed, wondering if the egg he had stolen was even going to hatch at all. He turned his attention back to the basin of unhatched eggs, it would be rude of him to leave the room since it was his weyr. He would find the young man later and have a word with him.
~~~~
The Mint egg began shivering and rock in F'rallen's hands, the little fire lizard inside deciding it was time to really try and free themselves. Small cracks began to appear along the surface of the egg, the egg beginning to crumble under the efforts of the little one inside.
A small foreleg and a wedge shaped head poked through the hole that appeared in the egg. After more struggling the green broke free of the egg and blinked up at the person holding her.
The green was a small and dainty one, frail looking like one wrong look would cause her to break. She was colored much like the shell of her egg, a soft green with darker green splashes like some one splashed her with paint. She looked up at F'rallen and kreeled angrily at him, leaning over and biting his finger as hard as she could. She most definitely did not want him.
Back in the weyr the eggs were rocking more violently now, each increasing their efforts to hatch. The Licorice bronze trilled loudly as Amika appeared in the weyr. He hopped off the edge of the basin and hurried toward the girl, kreeling happily. He stopped right in front of Amika and looked up at her expectantly.
On the sands the Caramel egg shifted out of its position and rolled against the edge of the basin, the shell shattering on impact. The brown left against the side of the wooden basin laid there dazed for a moment. The brown got to its feet slowly, shaking its head to clear it and to shake away pieces of egg stuck to it.
The Caramel Brown is a creamy brown in color with darker brown wing membranes, and a splash of darker brown, nearly black on his left flank. He peered over at the eggs then looked up at the people standing around. He trilled happily when he spotted the person he wanted and carefully slipped over the edge of the basin, landing more gracefully then some of his other siblings. He tripped over his drying wings as he hurried over to Kinga, trilling happily as he looked up at her hungrily, nudging against her ankle.
While his sibling was hurrying to their person the blue that had been in the Cotton Candy egg broke free from his shell quietly, slipping behind the Chocolate Chip egg to hide.
The blue peeked around the rocking of the Chocolate Chip egg and peered up at the people around the basin, sniffing the air as if trying to scent the person they wanted.
The Cotton Candy Blue was a pale, pastel blue all over, without any other color on his smooth hide. After a long moment he finally slipped out of hiding and to the edge of the basin, perching upon it as he looked around once more. He quietly slipped down to the floor and hurried over to P'neil and promptly began climbing the man's leg as he finally began chittering to get his attention.

(Will be short and terrible - I'm feeling icky)
P'neil, positioned as he was at the harper's elbow, had a wonderful view of the hatching fire lizards. And Arysa had a wonderful... well... hearing. He watched, intrigued, as the first few found their people. They certainly seemed to be delightful little beasts. Some of them looked positively bursting with personality.
Then that boy came came racing in, snatched an egg, and vanished before anyone could do any more than blink. Seeing no one willing to give up their spot to go after him, P'neil grudgingly began to turn away from the clutch. But, the cracking of more eggs distracted him, as did the sudden tugging on his pant leg. "Er, no, little blue, it's not me you want. Go on, shoo," he said, trying gently to herd the little beast to someone else. But the pale blue just chittered more urgently, and clung all the more to his leg.
"P'neil," Arysa said dryly. "He sounds hungry. Go on, feed him. It doesn't matter if you signed up or not, he wants you."
P'neil flushed uncomfortably, but knelt down. The blue immediately leaped up into his arms and lunged for the meat bowl. "Easy Blue," he said sternly, popping a small bit into the 'lizard's mouth. Arysa lifted an eyebrow. "You're naming him Blue?"
